SEISIÚN: The new season of the Comhaltas Summer Seisiún shows commences at the Devon Inn on Thursday next, July 5 at 8.30pm. These shows of traditional entertainment have proved very popular over recent years and are really enjoyed by all who attend, both local and visitor alike. A memorable night of top class song, music, dance and story is guaranteed comprising of a formal show in the first half and an informal second half where members of the audience are welcomed to join the performing group and provide a tune, song or step. Sometimes the night finishes with a set or a céilí dance.
DANCE FOR CANCER LINK BUS: A fundraising dance will take place in Fr Casey’s Club house Abbeyfeale on Friday, July 6 in aid of the Kerry Cork Limerick Cancer Health Link Bus. MOLADH GO DEO LE DIA: Much of the past fifty years is captured in a book especially complied to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale. The book contains many wonderful coloured photographs that show off the splendour of the Church, its stained glass windows and general embellishment. The title of the publication is Moladh go Deo Le Dia. (Praise be to God forever). Price €10. The book is available in O’Donoghue’s, Marguerite’s, Ann Lyons’ Moss Harnett’s. There’s only around a hundred copies left so get yours as soon as possible.
CAINT AGUS CRAIC: Castleisland Library are hosting an hour of caint craic & comhrá as Gaeilge on 8 Thursdays during June July & August from 1 -2pm. All adult are welcome to join in. It is not an Irish class, adults with very basic Irish are as welcome as fluent Irish speakers. Call in this Summer and take part in Bliain na Gaeilge.

TIPS FOR SUMMER SECURITY FROM IFA: Don’t forget about home and farm security during the good weather, Limerick man and IFA Deputy President Richard Kennedy has advised.
“It is important to be vigilant about your home and farm security during the summer when homes are more likely to be unoccupied or accessible. Never assume that because you are at home or nearby, your farm or property is safe,” Richard advises.
Ten tips to keep your home and farm secure this summer
Lock windows on the ground floor level.
Ensure that, if you are opening windows on the first floor, they cannot be entered from a porch, drain pipe or a ladder left out.
Be clever about how you lock up and when going to bed at night; make sure that if you are leaving a window open, it is not accessible.
If you are working in the farmyard or garden, make sure you have locked all the doors and windows to your home as you may be easily distracted in your work
If you are working with power tools or gardening equipment be extra vigilant as you may not hear a person entering your property.
Carry a key with you; don’t be tempted to leave the key under a pot or stone near the door
If you are to the rear of the property your home may appear to be unoccupied which might draw a criminal’s attention
Consider setting the alarm if you feel that you may get distracted in your work or nod off while relaxing.
When you are finished working outside, make sure to put away the power tools and machinery. Take a few minutes to ensure the safety of your property.
Mark your property – overt and covert markings will deter criminals and can help to reunite you with stolen property if it is stolen and subsequently recovered.
BOOK LAUNCH: A large gathering assembled at the Longcourt House Hotel, Newcastle West on Friday last, June 29 for the much anticipated launch of a first collection of short stories by local man, Pat McLoughlin. The book, To Weave with Words, was launched by Patrick O’ Donovan TD, Minister of State at the Department of Finance and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. Sheila O’ Regan, who was MC for the event, spoke in glowing terms about universal and eclectic content of the fifteen stories. Dr Paddy Fullam described the book as a superb mixture of humour and tragedy, of harmony and strife, of love and conflict and of loneliness and companionship. Minister O’ Donovan spoke about the clever plots and the twist in the tail of every story. He also highlighted the enormous contribution that Pat and his family had made to the local community. Dominic Taylor from the Limerick Writers’ Centre outlined the tremendous service that the Centre provides to the aspiring writers of the region. Sheila O’ Regan brought the launch to its conclusion by reading messages of congratulations from people who were unable to attend. The author, Pat McLoughlin, who was joined on the night by his family, said he was humbled by the enormous turnout and was amazed that the first print of his book was almost sold out. He also said that whatever profit he makes from the proceeds will go to the Friends of St Ita’s Hospital. The book was published by the Limerick Writers’ Centre and is available in the following shops: O’Mahony’s Bookshop, Limerick; Tony Hayes’s Shop, Newcastle West and Ann Lyons’s Shop, Abbeyfeale.

But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €66. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month. Please note that this fee is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES 2018: Papal Mass in Phoenix Park Sunday, August 26. Pope Francis will preside at the Closing Mass in the Phoenix Park. This is available to parishes / individuals. It is a free event. The venue can accommodate 500,000 people. Involves 3-5km EACH WAY due to the transport routes in place for this event. Guidance will be given re bringing seating / umbrellas / food. The earlier the booking, the closer the corral to the Altar. People needing special assistance can be with their family in a corral or in a designated area with a carer (copy of medical certificate required at booking) Parishes / Pastoral Areas to arrange transport. Book your bus / train asap. Festival of Families in Croke Park Saturday August 25, Pope Francis will be in attendance. This is an evening concert of music and dance, celebrating family life across the world and including five families who will share their faith. LYREACROMPANE RUN/WALK FOR ENABLE IRELAND: In what looks like becoming an annual event, the roads of Lyreacrompane will re-echo to the feet of walkers and runners on August Bank Holiday Sunday, August 5. Last year’s 5/10K Walk/Run, as part of the Dan Paddy Andy Festival, was so successful that the organisers have put it on the calendar of their event again this year. On this occasion, the charity chosen to benefit is Enable Ireland. The Walk/Run will start at ‘the Marquee’ beside the Four Elms Bar at 11am. The route is looped and, apart from helping a good cause, the walkers/runners will get an opportunity of taking part in a real rural Ireland walk/run and see Lyreacrompane at its best.
