COMMUNITY ALERT: We had a message from a young lady whose car was egged on Saturday night on Convent St. She said “I nearly crashed my car with fright. Please can you alert people in case it happens to someone else.” We welcome the appointment of a new Community Garda. He is Garda Tommy Commane and we hope that he enjoys his time here in Abbeyfeale. The National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) are warning the public to be vigilant against an ongoing smishing scam targeting people’s bank cards. Following the recent devastating floods in Sydney Russell White, the founder and chief executive of the Australian Road Safety Foundation said in the unexpected event of a flood emergency just three items could mean the difference between life and death. He said an emergency hammer was critical, allowing motorists to smash car windows and escape from a submerged vehicle and that people should also carry a water proof torch and a foil blanket. ”Those windows in cars are very tough to break and can often be almost impossible to do just with physical strength, so you do need something to make that job easier,” he said. ”If you do have something like that [emergency hammer] on board, make sure it is easy to get to; don’t have it locked in a boot or out of reach. You can also pull the head rest up and use it to break the window. Ye may be saying what is she on about – the danger of ending up in a submerged vehicle but with climate change anything is possible and during the recent bad weather a car travelling towards Foynes was swamped by a wave that came over the wall. Some fright to get. If you are 65, you live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then, because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. There may be some confusion over the word free - the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring. I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation. Then, in year two you will also receive a bill for the monitoring fee so in year one the bill will be €90 and in year two and every other year after it will €162 approx. If you wish you can arrange a direct debit and pay this amount off monthly. Committee members are Michael O’Kelly N.T., Chairman Seamus Stack, Secretary Mossie Gleeson, Assistant Treasurer Kathleen Collins, Assistant Secretary Mary McArthur, John O’Sullivan, Billy Quirke N.T., Cllr. Francis Foley, Catherine Daly, Maurice O’Connell, Assistant Treasurer Marian Harnett.
