REMEMBERING A PRIEST OF THE DIOCESE: Fr James Fitzgibbon (1803-1832) was a young Limerick priest who fell victim to the cholera epidemic. In early summer 1832, the cholera epidemic that for two years had raged through Europe, arrived in Limerick. Among the hundreds that fell victim to the disease, was Fr James Fitzgibbon (1803-1832), originally from St Mary’s parish. The young priest attached to St John’s Parish, ordained from
Maynooth in 1827, contracted the illness in the course of his ministry. He died on August 11, 1832 and a news report of the time reads ‘his funeral being attended by immense crowds’. A Limerick Herald editorial remarked, ‘Since the commencement of the awful malady that has terminated his career, his labours for the poor wereunceasing, both day and night… in his mission of love’. Buried in St John’s chapel, his remains were found to be incorrupt in 1861, when they were rein-terred inthe north transept of the newly constructed St John’s cathedral. We give thanks for the ministry of all those priests who have faithfully served God’s people in this place, especially in times of difficulty, and we invoke their intercession in this time of pandemic.

BEAL NA MBLATH COMMEMORATIONS: Marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Micheal Collins the commemoration will take place between Macroom and Bandon outside Kilmurry on Sunday, August 21 at 3pm. Oration will be shared by the Taoiseach and Tánaiste. If you plan on travelling the easiest route from Abbeyfeale is Millstreet, Macroom and turn off the Cork road at Kilmurry. In order to get parking close to the site of the ambush you would need to be there by 1pm. Bring a folding chair.

THE LAUGHING BOY: The untold story of Irish song The Laughing Boy, written by Brendan Behan in memory of Michael Collins will air on TG4 on August 24 at 9.30pm. With an extraordinary afterlife it became the powerful left-wing anthem of resistance in Greece in the late Sixties. The film takes poet Theo Dorgan on an odyssey of his own, as he uncovers the truth of the story behind the song. It is a narrative that interweaves the tragic and bloody birth-pangs of both modern Ireland and modern Greece. Here in the parish of Abbeyfeale, we plan to return to the basket collection in the near future. For this to happen efficiently we need six people per mass to help with the collections. Some of the changes taking place in the parish of Abbeyfeale include new arrangements for funerals and baptisms. After consultation with the Pastoral Area Council, and the parish councils in each of the five parishes, it was agreed, that due to the number of Sunday Masses celebrated in the five churches in the area, it will no longer be possible to have funeral Masses on a Sunday. Baptisms in Abbeyfeale will be celebrated on the first Saturday of each month at 5.00pm. Also, on the second Sunday of the month after the 12noon Mass. Baptisms in Athea will be celebrated on the third Saturday of the month during the summertime at 2.30p m and the third Sunday of the month in wintertime at 12noon. Be very cautious of a person who doesn’t share a recent face picture with you, particularly after you have shared yours. If they don’t want to share a face picture, consider asking them to go on a live video call (many apps have this option built in so you don’t have to share your mobile number). Ask for their social media handles. Do you have friends in common on Instagram or Facebook? Be wary of new accounts with low follower count and few posts. Let friends know where you’re going – send a text to a trusted friend or in a group chat, include your live location so you can be found if you need help. Meet in a public place first. Take a few minutes to chat and feel confident you want to proceed before going somewhere private. Think before accepting food or drink. Unless you’ve seen them prepare it – it’s best not to accept to avoid being spiked. If an emergency unfolds, call 999. If something happens – report it! It seems that people are being contacted and threatened that pornographic content will be posted in their name. If you get a call contact the Gardai immediately. If you go to the beach leave nothing visible in your car and don’t put stuff in the boot after you park in case you are being observed – do it before you leave home. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then, because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. There may be some confusion over the word free - the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring.
