A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME: Glórach broke new ground over the weekend in their quest to bring new, innovative and exciting shows to Abbeyfeale. The one woman show performed by a Cork woman with roots in Castleisland “A Rose By Any Other Name” who had just returned from a 13 performance run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it received rave reviews. The show dealt with the Shakespeare authorship question, with Rose charting the colourful journey of her real-life experiences to discover who is the real Shakespeare? From clues in Cambridge, to proof in Padua, and validations in Venice, she told the story of her search and talk of an eye opener for those of us who suffered through Shakespeare in our youth. The month ends with a fantastic traditional music gig, featuring Andy Martyn, John Carty, Gino Lupari and Matt Griffin. Percussionist Gino Lupari will be particularly familiar to local audiences, having featured in so many memorable Four Men and a Dog concerts. GLÓRACH RUMOURS 2: We closed last week’s report with news that the Glórach bosses were about to meet to progress “Galtee Cheese”, which the readers from last week will remember is the working title for the major film project, that is being put together, that will look at certain aspects of life in Abbeyfeale parish and beyond during the final century of the last millennium. My mole is able to report on how the magnificent repast served to the bosses went down – not well by all accounts. But more on that later. My mole tells me that the three bosses decided that for simplicity and ease of reference that they should identify a collective name by which they should, hereafter, be referred to. After much discussion, they decided they should be referred to as “the three wise men”. And, now to the repast served. One of the bosses refused to eat the beluga caviar and instead ordered in pizza from the nearby Roma take-away. All three refused to drink the Russian vodka given the current situation in Eastern Europe and simply poured all 3 bottles down the sink. Further lubrication was called for and the solution was for Leen’s Hotel to deliver 3 bottles of 25 year old single malt. The, specially imported, Havana cigars were greatly enjoyed with all three bosses puffing their way through 3 cigars, apiece. On conclusion of the repast and before attending to other business, they were astonished to see that the cigar smoke had, greatly, discoloured the recently painted foyer walls. After much wailing and tut tutting it was decided to call in Martin Murphy, painter and decorator, to do a re-paint job, which he readily agreed to and further stated that he would do so without charge as he opined that the olfactory sensation from a good Havana cigar is hard to beat. The sigh of relief from the three wise men was of such magnitude that it was heard by some residents of the nearby sheltered housing project. Now they were ready for business matters and first item on the agenda was the current standing of Abbeyfeale as a business town. Much discussion ensued and it was readily agreed that this needed much further contemplation and a decision was taken to refer the matter to the MAGA W. P. or to give it its full title, Make Abbeyfeale Great Again Working Party. After copious quantities of food and much quaffing of fine Irish whiskey, spirits were beginning to sag and the occasional nodding-off was witnessed. The upshot of all this was to abandon the field of conversation to another occasion when minds would be sharper and, as such, a date was set for a further meeting that would be devoted, in its entirety, to the “Galtee Cheese” project. My mole is emboldened to undertake further reporting on such a meeting. Stay with us for further crumbs on the intricacies of high-powered meanderings.

Avoiding phone scams: 1.Hang up - Don’t let the caller know they reached a responsive phone number. By pressing buttons or trying to talk to an operator, you may be in for even more robocalls. 2. Use call blocking – Your phone carrier may provide a service to block known phone spam numbers or at least ID them for you when your phone rings. 3, Don’t rely on caller ID as proof – Phone scams have gotten better at making you think it is a legitimate number by “spoofing” an ID and displaying some type of official name. Some people even report seeing their own number calling them. An Garda Síochána would like to provide the following advice to the public in general when speaking with or intending to meet up with persons they have met online: Get a face picture from the person you intend to meet. Be very cautious of a person who doesn’t share a recent face picture with you, particularly after you have shared yours. If they don’t want to share a face picture, consider asking them to go on a live video call (many apps have this option built in so you don’t have to share your mobile number). Ask for their social media handles. Do you have friends in common on Instagram or Facebook? Be wary of new accounts with low follower count and few posts. Let friends know where you’re going – send a text to a trusted friend or in a group chat, include your live location so you can be found if you need help. Meet in a public place first. Take a few minutes to chat and feel confident you want to proceed before going somewhere private. Think before accepting food or drink. Unless you’ve seen them prepare it – it’s best not to accept to avoid being spiked. If an emergency unfolds, call 999. If something happens – report it! It seems that people are being contacted and threatened that pornographic content will be posted in their name. If you get a call contact the Gardai immediately. If you go to the beach leave nothing visible in your car and don’t put stuff in the boot after you park in case you are being observed – do it before you leave home. The best cure against ransomware remains diligent prevention. You are strongly advised to: Regularly back up data stored on your electronic devices. Watch your clicks – do you know where a link will take you? Do not open attachments in e-mails from unknown senders, even if they look important and credible. Ensure that your security software and operating system are up to date. Use two-factor authentication (2FA) to protect your user accounts. Limit the possibility to export large amounts of corporate data to external file exchange portals. If you do get caught out report it immediately. If you suffer from a gambling addiction there is a counsellor/psychotherapist available at the Listowel Family Resource Centre. Further information from 068 23584. If you are 65, you live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then, because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. There may be some confusion over the word free - the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring. I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation. Then, in year two you will also receive a bill for the monitoring fee so in year one the bill will be €90 and in year two and every other year after it will €162 approx. If you wish you can arrange a direct debit and pay this amount off monthly.
