ABBEYFEALE ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE 2018:  A meeting of the Abbeyfeale St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee will be held in St Ita’s Hall on Monday, February 19 at 7pm. Anyone interested in helping out with the parade is invited to attend.   Also the annual church gate collection takes place on the weekend of February 24/25. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

TWO WEEKS TO GO TO DUAGH PARISH MISSION:  The Mission will run from Saturday, February 24 to Friday, March 2 in Duagh and Lyreacompane.  It will be led by the Redemptorists, Limerick.  Everyone welcome.

TALKS AT THE LIBRARY:  Healthy Ireland at Abbeyfeale Library supported by W LR presents a series of Talks on Health and Well Being. 1.  General Nutrition with a focus on Food Intolerance & Healthy Meal Planning for busy people/cooking for one will take place on Wednesday, February 28 in Abbeyfeale Library from 7- 8pm. Presented by Sid Sheehan Chef and Nutritional Therapist. Sid has been a chef for many years working in many fine restaurants in Kerry. He then qualified in Nutritional Therapy and wholeheartedly understands the effect both negative and positive on our bodies by the food we eat.  2.  Our Anxiety and Connecting with Teenagers will take place on Thursday, March 15 from 7 – 8 pm. Presented by Anthony O Shaughnessy ACI/APCP . Anthony has been working as a counsellor and therapist for over twenty years. He is a graduate of the National Counselling Institute of Ireland and of Trinity College Dublin.  Over these years, he has worked with people of all ages, supporting their emotional needs in times of crisis.  This is a Healthy Ireland Initiative, supported by your local library and West Limerick Resources. CHILDHOOD CANCER:  Survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer, their families and friends are welcome to a survivorship meeting in the Clayton Hotel, Cork on Thursday, February 15 at 5.30pm.  This meeting is to discuss the health concerns and long-term follow-up of survivors. PASTORAL COUNCIL:  There will be a meeting at the Desmond Complex of the pastoral councils in the Ide Naofa and Our Lady’s Pastoral Area on Wednesday, February 21 at 7.30pm. The focus of this meeting will be on furthering the Synod proposals in the Pastoral Plan on Team Ministry.

CAREBRIGHT:  CareBright are running a Healthcare Training Programme (Internship) in Newcastle West over a five week period.   The training starts on Monday, February 26.  The programme includes QQI L5 Care Skills, Manual Handling, C.P.R. and Work experience in the community. This will equip people who want to return to the workforce with the relevant skills, experience and employment in the community on successful completion of the internship programme.   If interested email C.V to [email protected] by Monday, February 12.

JUBILEE CONCERT:   JUBILEE CONCERT:  Two car loads came from Tallaght, a bus load from Limerick arrived with our beloved Fr. John, the group of people from Cahirsiveen that have come to every concert since the first one all those years ago were there again, we met people from Clare, Cork, Tipperary and Kerry not to mention the many parishioners who attended.  Everyone had an amazing night with Finbar Wright who was joined as well by his family as well as Delia Murphy’s grandson, uileann piper and composer , Ronan Browne whose playing of Ave Maria on the flute was a ‘hear a pin drop’ moment.  The musicians in the orchestra were top class as were his backing singers.  What a great start to our Jubilee Year celebrations. It was a memorable night and we look forward to other events in the coming months.

TRANSITION YEAR MUSICAL:  The Transition Year in Colaiste Ide agus Iosef are proud to present this year’s musical “Back in the Habit” a comedy based on the hit musical Sister Act. This not to be missed musical will take place in Colaiste Ide agus Iosef on Thursday March 1 & Friday March 2.  Doors open at 7pm and the curtains will be drawn at 7.30 pm sharp. KNOCKNASNA N.S.:  Due to popular demand, further copies of “Caoga Blian ag Fás” have been printed and the final ten copies are available to purchase from Anne Lyons sweet shop Abbeyfeale or Scoil Naomh Pádraig – Knocknasna 0879601506.   The book contains nearly a hundred photos taken over the last fifty years at Scoil Naomh Pádraig – Knocknasna.

HUNT FOR A HOUND:  Abbeyside Players are in rehearsal for their production of ‘Second Honeymoon’ which will be staged in the marvellous Glorach Theatre around Easter.  The play is now fully cast with 12 local actors, fully cast that is – except they still need a drama dog.  Over the last few weeks 17 dogs have been considered for the role from shiatsu’s to bloodhounds, terriers to Kerry Blue’s and every breed in between but now, as in the best beauty contests, numbers have been reduced to just three.  ‘Wham’ from NCW who is young, energetic and cute. ‘ Dingo’ from Abbeyfeale – a handsome mongrel with great personality but an unfortunate independent streak which could cause trouble during the performances.  ‘Molly’ from Rock chapel is the third option and current favourite as she is pretty and calm – seriously overweight though!   Will ‘Wham’ learn that there is more to life than chasing pussies?  Has ‘Dingo’ the self-discipline to concentrate on a part in a play.  Will ‘Molly’ resist the dog biscuits and shed a few pounds.  A decision will be made shortly.

NEW MASS TIMES FOR 2018: Saturday evening Mass will now be @ 6.30pm and Sunday morning Mass will be at 9.15am.  No change to the 12 noon Mass.   Holy day’s Mass will be 11am & 6.30pm.   Daily Mass remains as always – 10am unless when there is a funeral.

“NOBODY’S TALKING TO ME”:  This year’s offering from Abbeyfeale Drama Group is a comedy by Tommy Marren.    This is a hilarious play based on a couple that are 50 years married but haven’t spoken for the past 10 years!    The story unfolds with a few twists and ends happily ever after.  It will start its run in Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse on Tuesday, February 13 and continue on February 15, 17.18,20,22, 24 and 25 next.  Doors open 7pm.  Show commences at 8pm sharp each night.

LEADER FUNDING INFORMATION SESSION: The Rural Development (LEADER) Programme 2014-2020 aims to support the development of rural areas by funding a range of community projects and eligible innovative rural enterprises. West Limerick Resources invites Individuals, Businesses and Community groups to attend an information session regarding recent changes on the LEADER programme, the updated application process and available funding for 2018.  The session will take place in the Desmond Complex, Newcastle West, on Thursday, February 8, at 7.30pm.  All are welcome. Following the information session, one to one application clinics will take place in Newcastle West (February 19), Askeaton (February 21) and Abbeyfeale (February 27). WEST LIMERICK SINGING CLUB: West Limerick singing club will hold their annual traditional concert with special guest Anna Marie O’Riordan in Fr Caseys Gaa Hall, Abbeyfeale on Saturday March 10 @ 8pm.  Admission €10.

GLÓRACH NOTES: Bingo continues every Monday at 8.30 pm and your support as ever is greatly appreciated.  Thanks also to all who turned up to our showing of Shankly: Nature’s Fire on Wednesday.  There was some extraordinary footage from Liverpool in the 1960′s, particularly the homecoming celebration on winning the FA cup in 1965, when the numbers present on the street were just mind boggling to witness.  Particular emphasis was placed on Bill Shankly’s socialism, and how much of the corporate nature of the present day premiership would not sit easily with his conscience.  Thanks also to Jack and Áine for the drinks vouchers, many of which were availed of as film-goers dissected the documentary they had seen afterwards at McEnery’s.

‘PRETEND SICK’:   Athea Drama Group will perform their new play in the Community Hall, Athea on February 15, 17,18,22,24,25.  Doors open 7pm.  Show 8pm.

FREE COMPUTER CLASSES:  Iolar Training is running some more free Digital Skills for Citizens computer and internet training courses in Newcastle West beginning on February 19/20.  The courses are open to everyone and will run for two hours per week for five weeks. Training is aimed at beginners and new users and gives participants the knowledge, skills and confidence to use the internet. Last year, almost 500 Limerick city and county residents completed our free Digital Skills for Citizens courses going from learning how to switch on a computer to booking flights and making video calls. The core topics covered include: Safety & security, Using email, Using search engines and websites, Accessing government services online, Conducting everyday transactions, Using apps, Voice and video calls online.  Optional modules include: Online shopping, online banking and security, Social media, Video, TV and radio online, Digital photography, Using YouTube instructional videos and advanced government services.  Training is free for all participants. ABBEYFEALE PARENT & TODDLER GROUP meets every Tuesday and Thursday in St. Ita’s Hall in Abbeyfeale from 11 – 12:30pm.  New people always welcome.  This group is a great way to introduce your child to a pre-school environment, teaching them to play and share with other children and a fantastic way for parents to make new friends as well.  Activities each week include singing nursery rhymes, painting/colouring, table-top art and crafts, also messy play, which encourages children’s imagination and they learn about different textures & help develop their motor skills (hand eye co-ordination).  Parents have time to chat, with a cup of tea, sing and play also.  Please contact Mary at West Limerick Resources on 087 9382883.

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES 2018:  You can currently only book tickets for the 3 day Congress (1 day or 5 day), but when booking a congress ticket you can register for the free weekend tickets. Every person attending each event must be registered to gain access to that event. You can book as an individual (over 18), as a family or group, or as a priest. Where a family wishes to register, a single family leader can register all members together. When part of a family/group, all children under 18 are free but each person must be registered in order to receive their ticket. Costs for adults: 5 day ticket €68, 1 day ticket €38. GARDA NOTICE:  The Gardai have asked us to inform parishioners that parking is prohibited on the road leading into Cedarville. Parking is not allowed where there are double yellow lines. Parking while at Mass on this roadway is causing traffic congestion. Recently an ambulance had difficulty in getting through.  Your cooperation would be very much appreciated.

COMMUNITY ALERT: If someone arrives into your yard or to your door wanting to sell you a power washer or the like take their registration and ring the Gardai on 068 30010 or in the unlikely event that you can’t get through then ring 069 20650.   Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch so how can you expect a bargain of a washer, more than likely it’s stolen.   Ask for Angela ; If you are out in company and feel vulnerable there is a new initiative where you can approach a member of staff in a pub, restaurant, nightclub and ask for Angela.  The member of staff will recognise that you feel in danger and call you a taxi and see that you get home safe.  If you feel isolated and would like a friendly voice on the end of the phone ring the Farm and Rural Stress line any evening between 6-10pm for a chat.  An avalanche of scam calls are hitting some people, only answer a call you recognise and never ring back.  New regulations concerning braking, lighting and weights on agricultural vehicles came into effect on January 1. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company and this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80.  If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65.    If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56.  This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month.   The installing company are required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification. We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. ST. ITA’S DAYCARE CENTRE:  The Day Care Centre located near the Church and beside the Glórach Theatre hosts two open days every week.  An open invitation has been issued to anyone who would like to join them for a four course lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays followed by dancing, bingo, cards and afternoon tea.  The cost is just €10 per person.  They also say that the Day Care Centre Bus and care are available to provide transport where possible.
