GLÓRACH NEWS: After a rigorous selection process, Molly, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel from Rockchapel will star in the Abbeyside Players production of Sam Cree’s comedy ‘Second Honeymoon’ alongside a sterling cast under the direction of Merce Hobson. Angeline O’Donnell who plays her besotted owner said “I am delighted that Molly has been chosen, she has great stage presence and acts like a dog with a future”. THE TWO LOVES OF GABRIEL FOLEY: With the inclement weather forcing the rescheduling of the festival, we finally took to the stage at Knockaderry Community Hall on Thursday last with our production of the Jimmy Keary comedy, The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley. It was not without a certain degree of trepidation, given that we had not performed the play since last November and many of the cast members had been involved in different productions since. We needn’t have worried as all involved gave tremendous performances, eliciting much laughter from the considerable crowd that attended. It was great to get feedback from adjudicator, Tony McCleane Fay, who gave an in depth analysis on his interpretation of the play and the acting. Lots of positivity, constructive criticism and interesting pointers. We were also extremely well looked after by the organising committee, and any drama group travelling to Knockaderry can be certain of one thing; they will be well fed! The finale on Sunday night saw us pick up two awards, with Best Stage Make-Up going to Theresa O’Halloran and Best Stage Management going to Martin Tobin and Lorcan Curtin. A great experience overall, thank again to the organising committee, the audience that supported us, Seán O’Connell for the immense work he did with the set, and all the cast and crew who gave up their time and gave their all for this one-off event.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE 2018: The parade will start from Mountmahon at 4.30pm on account of the Rugby match. It will then proceed down Main Street and past the reviewing stand in The Square. Participants are asked to assemble at the Industrial Estate from 4pm, they are responsible for their own insurance cover and will be required to sign a waiver to that effect. Prizes will be awarded for Best Float, Best Decorated Window and Best Youth Entry.
BRUACH NA CARTRAIGE: The Rockchapel based group Ceoltoiri Sliabh Luachra will present their new show “Music from The Manuscripts” in Bruach Na Cartraige Rockchapel on Friday March 16 at 8.30pm. This show is a celebration of the music of local musicians Dave Dan Curtin of Stagmount Rockchapel, and his father Dan Curtin, and their neighbour Dave Leahy Secondgloss Mountcollins who died in 1907. The manuscripts from all three were recently discovered. They give us an important glimpse of an older layer of Sliabh Luachra Music that predates that what prevails today, with many tunes that have not been heard or heard of for over one hundred years.

Also keep the centre by the main gate free in case of emergency.

COMMUNITY ALERT: Abbeyfeale Community Alert, set up in on January 15, 1998 are celebrating 20 years in existence this year. It is made up of volunteers, all of whom are giving their time voluntarily helping our Community which is at the heart of who we are. We continue to provide this voluntary service so that the elderly in our community feel safe in their own homes. . The AGM will be held at Leens Hotel on Wednesday, April 11 at 8pm. New members are very welcome. A new phone scam is doing the rounds - and it’s a bit smarter than some of the others, because it looks like it’s an Irish number at first glance. Though it starts with ’087′, the calls are actually originating in Bosnia. The latest scam out of Australia features the harvesting of personal data when you return a missed call so we cannot emphasise enough to never ring back a missed call unless you recognise it. Housing Aid for Older People Scheme used to improve the condition of an older person’s home is aimed at people 66 years of age and older and is means tested. People with a disability or who are elderly can apply for a grant to purchase grab rails, a level access shower, access ramps or a stair lift. Contact 061 496000 for further details. Ask for Angela; if you are out in company and feel vulnerable there is a new initiative where you can approach a member of staff in a pub, restaurant, and nightclub and ask for Angela. If you feel isolated and would like a friendly voice on the end of the phone ring the Farm and Rural Stress line any evening between 6-10pm for a chat. An avalanche of scam calls are hitting some people, only answer a call you recognise and never ring back. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company and this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80. If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56. This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month.
