We are calling on all parents/guardians of current first/second/third year students or previous youth club members who are now over the age of 18 who would be willing to give a helping hand weekly for an hour and a half at our youth clubs. We need the help of you, the parent/guardian so the youth clubs can go ahead and allow the youths to meet their friends in a safe, supervised facility. GLÓRACH NEWS: They came from Offaly, Cork, Derry and from the Cavan/ Meath border and were highly entertained last Friday by Andy Martyn, John Carty, Gino Lupari and Matt Griffen the four musicians who are currently on an All Ireland tour. Of course we all knew Gino Lupari who was a founding member of Four Men and a Dog with our own Donal Murphy and who has played at manys the session and concert here in Abbeyfeale. I had forgotten he had such a wonderful voice, so good in fact that when he sang Nancy Spain I was transported to the land of Nod and was only awoken by the rapturous round of applause he received. It was a wonderful night and will go down in the annals of the Glórach. Bingo at the Glórach, every Monday night starting at 8 pm. There are exciting plans for Glórach over the winter but it will need the support of all of us to keep it open, fair dues to the Bingo players whose constant attendance every Monday night helps to keep the cash flowing.

VOLUNTEER WITH LIMERICK WEST SPECIAL OLYMPICS CLUB: Limerick West Special Olympics club are seeking volunteers to accompany adult athletes on a bus from the Abbeyfeale area to Bocce training in Newcastle West and home again on Tuesday evenings. We are also looking for volunteers to assist with bocce training (similar to bowls) each week. Our athletes have competed at both regional and national level so you could learn a fun new game with a great group of people! FUNERAL BEREAEMENT TEAM TRAINING: Two nights of training for Funeral/Bereavement Teams will be offered on October 18th and 25th from 7:30pm to 9pm in the Diocesan Centre. Thetraining will cover the practical steps involved in setting up and resourcing Funeral/Bereavement Teams in pastoral units/parishes. Following these initial two nights, additional supports and resources needed will be considered and further training sessions will be developed. Again, we would encourage people who have a sense of calling to this ministry area, as well as those already involved, to register for the two nights so we can learn from each other’s experiences.

Avoiding phone scams: 1.Hang up - Don’t let the caller know they reached a responsive phone number. By pressing buttons or trying to talk to an operator, you may be in for even more robocalls. 2. Use call blocking – Your phone carrier may provide a service to block known phone spam numbers or at least ID them for you when your phone rings. 3, Don’t rely on caller ID as proof – Phone scams have gotten better at making you think it is a legitimate number by “spoofing” an ID and displaying some type of official name. Some people even report seeing their own number calling them. An Garda Síochána would like to provide the following advice to the public in general when speaking with or intending to meet up with persons they have met online: Get a face picture from the person you intend to meet. Be very cautious of a person who doesn’t share a recent face picture with you, particularly after you have shared yours. If they don’t want to share a face picture, consider asking them to go on a live video call (many apps have this option built in so you don’t have to share your mobile number). Ask for their social media handles. Do you have friends in common on Instagram or Facebook? Be wary of new accounts with low follower count and few posts. Let friends know where you’re going – send a text to a trusted friend or in a group chat, include your live location so you can be found if you need help. Meet in a public place first. Take a few minutes to chat and feel confident you want to proceed before going somewhere private. Think before accepting food or drink. Unless you’ve seen them prepare it – it’s best not to accept to avoid being spiked. If an emergency unfolds, call 999. If something happens – report it! It seems that people are being contacted and threatened that pornographic content will be posted in their name. If you get a call contact the Gardai immediately. If you go to the beach leave nothing visible in your car and don’t put stuff in the boot after you park in case you are being observed – do it before you leave home. The best cure against ransomware remains diligent prevention. You are strongly advised to: Regularly back up data stored on your electronic devices. Watch your clicks – do you know where a link will take you? Do not open attachments in e-mails from unknown senders, even if they look important and credible. Ensure that your security software and operating system are up to date. Use two-factor authentication (2FA) to protect your user accounts. Limit the possibility to export large amounts of corporate data to external file exchange portals. If you do get caught out report it immediately. If you suffer from a gambling addiction there is a counsellor/psychotherapist available at the Listowel Family Resource Centre. Further information from 068 23584. If you are 65, you live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then, because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72. There may be some confusion over the word free - the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring. I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation.
