BEREAEMENT SUPPORT:  Grief is the normal response that a person has, in the face of a life altering loss. The following information may be of support to you and yours in your loss. While not every grieving person needs counselling, every person who is grieving needs and deserves our support. Everyone grieves, and yet each of us will grieve differently.
Grief lasts as long as it takes us to accept and learn to live with our loss, and that’s
different for everyone. This does not mean that we try to put our loss behind us, but that
we now have to adjust to a life without the person that meant so much to us. As we
grieve, we try to make sense of what has happened while learning to live our life
without that person.  For some people, that grief process lasts a few months. For others, it may take years.  Even within a family, grief is different for each person, because everyone had a different relationship with the person we have lost. Most people cope with their grief
with the support of family and friends. Local community, parish, neighbours, can all
offer practical, emotional and other supports at this difficult time. If you are struggling with a life altering loss, please: Seek out good, clear information about grief & loss. Be patient and gentle with yourself as you grieve. Recognise the extent of your loss. Allow yourself to cope & grieve in a way that suits you. Try to sleep well, eat well and take gentle exercise. Try not to make major or rash decisions while you grieve. Accept emotional and practical support from friends and family.  Get professional help if you are finding it too difficult.
Sometimes family and community support isn’t enough. Bereavement counselling may
be a support to you if your loss was unexpected, unexplained, possibly avoidable or
sudden; if your relationship with the person who has died wasn’t fully resolved, if you
are alone or feel unsupported in your grief, or if you have a lot of other stress in your
life. Bereavement Counselling Services: Bereavement Counselling is available through
the Limerick Social Service Centre, Tel. No 061-314111 and the Milford Care Centre.

FEALE CULTURE NIGHT:  The inaugural Feale Culture Night was held at the Glórach on Saturday evening, opening with a memorable performance by the YouthTrad group.  Under the guidance of Mícheál and Eibhlín Broderick, the group have come on in leaps and bounds since rehearsals commenced at the Glórach at the end of September and the hard work and dedication really showed on the night.  Eibhlín and her brother Liam would duet beautifully on their version of the song, ‘Shenandoah’, while there were also excellent performances from the Ballybehy ensemble of sisters Sarah and Laura O’Donoghue and Susanne Quille, who were also joined on stage by Susanne’s daughter Chloe.  Maurice O’Connell evoked the role of the Seanchaí in the retelling of the Desmond Love story, Seán and Lorcan played out a sporting vignette, while Jim Dennison, backed by Ríona Ní Curtáin on piano, and joined by the whole group, ended the night with a rendition of ‘The Wild Mountain Thyme’.  From all involved with the Feale Culture Group, a massive thanks to everyone who participated in the concert, to the Glórach for the use of the venue and their support, to all the patrons who attended and supported our raffle, to the stage hands, ticket sellers and volunteers in the lobby.  It was in the lobby that the night lingered on, with a large and richly-deserved repast held  for all the participants.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS:   Santa and Mrs Claus will visit the Square on Friday, November 25 at 6pm and our new Mayor, Councillor Francis Foley will switch on the lights this year.  The following fundraiser is being held to help with the purchase of lights.:

ABBEYFEALE ON FILM AND IN CONTEXT; will be screening at Glórach Cinema, Abbeyfeale on Thurs & Fri, 24^th & 25^th at 8pm – Tickets €10.  You will see extensive film footage, from 1963, of interviews with local people regarding the “Land Wars” and “A Day at the Fair”, as well as other footage relevant to Abbeyfeale.The film, also, looks at events & circumstances, both Nationally & Internationally, and their impact on everyday lives in the early and middle part of the last century.It, really, is an event not be missed and Abbeyfeale, Athea, Brosna, Duagh, Mountcollins, Templeglantine, Tournafulla & Knocknagoshel Churches are beneficiaries from ticket sales.Book on glorachabbeyfeale.com or 087 1383940.

CAROLS AT THE GLÓRACH:  Susan Browne and the Broadford Youth Choir will perform a night of Carols on Friday, December 9.

GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT:  For the first time since 2019 we will be able to celebrate Christmas in our parish church without any restrictions. We are delighted to announce the return of the annual Christmas Concert. This year we are delighted to welcome to Abbeyfeale the singing group, ‘CELTIC BROTHERS’ formerly known as ‘The Willoughby Brothers’. They have entertained and endeared audiences for the past number of years and are delighted to bring their Christmas Show to the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale on Sunday 11th of December 2022. Their repertoire features a blend of Irish Ballads, popular classics and contemporary songs that take their audience on an emotive musical journey. The Christmas Concert in Abbeyfeale will have many seasonal songs. The funds raised from the concert will go towards the St Ita’s Hall (Hall Ide Naofa), Renovation Fund.   St Ita’s Hall is a very significant resource centre for the people of Abbeyfeale, and surrounding parishes and provides a wide range of support services for all members of the local community.   St Ita’s  Hall will be 100 years old in 2028 and significant renovations plans have been drawn up to update the building, so that it is fit for purpose and continues to serve the needs of the local community. Let’s shake off the restrictive spirit of Covid and get into the Christmas Spirit! ABBEYFEALE’S NIGHT AT THE OSKARS: We hope to receive our first consignment of DVD’s and USB sticks towards the middle of next week.  They will be on sale at the Day Care Centre, Batt’s in the Square and An Siopa Milsean and will make an ideal Christmas gift.  The DVD’s will retail at €10 each and the USB sticks at €15.

BRIDGE CLUB:  Abbeyfeale Bridge Club meet at St. Ita’s Day Care Centre every Thursday from 7.30pm.  New members welcome.

CARA:  Cara are all about the Creative Arts Raising Abbeyfeale – a dedicated group set up to promote and showcase Abbeyfeale through the arts.  The idea is to use the arts to lift the profile of Abbeyfeale on a local, regional and national level.  The calendar “Abbeyfeale – The Bare Essentials” is their first project.   Calendars on sale throughout the town and are currently making their way to ex pats all over the world through [email protected] If you are looking for an unusual gift for your loved one who is far from home this Christmas this will surely put a smile on their face and they will make a collector’s item in time to come.  Sales will not only benefit the Irish Cancer Society but will enable CARA “to create a dedicated fund for future artworks and creative projects in the Abbeyfeale streetscape”.

COMMUNITY ALERT:  Tickets for our annual Christmas Party in Fr. Casey’s Club House with dancing after lunch to Paddy Qulligan cost €25 and are selling out fast.   They are on sale in Kathleen’s Foodstore, An Siopa Milsean, Gourmet Green and the Post Office in Templeglantine.  There will be goodie bags for everyone in the audience and talks from the local Fire Station Officer and our new Community Garda Tommy Commane. A raffle will also take place on the date.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: : Currently Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place every Wednesday and  Friday in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel from after the 10.00am Mass until 7.00pm.

BOOK LAUNCHES:  A local girl, Catherine Richardson formerly Catherine Fitzgerald from Knocknasna. daughter of Mikie and the late Betty has just published her first book.  It’s entitled ‘The Simple Life’.  Catherine qualified as a nurse but continued with more studies in Reflexology, Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine and other therapies.    The book gives us an insight into Catherine’s life and the influences that shaped it combined with practical information – a real treasure to be read and reread.    The book is available in two well-known shops ‘ An Siopa Milséan and ‘ Heavenly Gifts’ here in town.  Catherine will be launching her book  on Saturday, November 26^th she will be signing copies of the book in ‘Nature’s Hand’ – the health shop in the Crescent Shopping Centre between 11am – 1pm. Then on Saturday, November 26th, Bruach na Carraige, Rockchapel will be host to a book launch by local man Pat Mulcahy.  His book entitled ‘For God and Country’ are the memoires of the Rockchapel man as he describes his colourful and eventful life spanning his start in Jersey during WW2, life in the US in the army and NYPD and his return to his native County Cork.  Pat was co-founder of Project Children, an organisation responsible for bringing over 23,000 children from the troubles of Northern Ireland to the US for a six week break. The launch begins at 8pm with entertainment from local musicians followed by refreshments.  All proceeds will go to Rockchapel NS and Bruach na Carraige.  Pat’s mother was Eileen Mulcahy (nee Moriarty) from Caherlane, Abbeyfeale. It’s a very small world as Pat’s wife, Kathleen Beirne whom he met in the US is my neighbour from Co. Longford .

BOOK LAUNCH: , Tuesday, 22 November.  Of Limerick Saints and Seekers is edited by David Bracken, Limerick  Diocesan Archivist. The collection – featuring stories of the great and good people of Limerick from St Ita to the present day – celebrates the contribution
of people of faith, from this place, in every generation. We are part of a long tradition in Limerick and an awareness of that inheritance will help carry us forward with renewed hope and vigour. RAMBLING HOUSES: Knockalougha on the 3^rd. Tuesday of the month..  Every 1st Thursday of each month there is a Rambling House in the Community Centre in Knockanure. DUAGH: From the First Sunday in Advent (November 26th/27th) St. Bridget’s Church, Duagh will have just one weekend Mass.  Saturday, November 19th will be the final Saturday Vigil Mass.   There will be Mass every Sunday morning at 11.30am and in the Sacred Heart Church, Lyreacrompane at10.00 a.m.

Grow Mental Health Information Session, Wednesday 16th November, 7pm to 8:30pm, at Grow offices, 33 Henry Street, Limerick.Grow is a mental health charity that provides free, friendly, community based, peer support groups for anyone who is experiencing a mental health issue.  Sharon Kleiser (Grow volunteer and
participant in our Lay Pastoral Ministry Programme), along with Mary Purcell (Grow Midwest Manager) and Amie Hughes (Grow Midwest Coordinator) are offering an information session on Wed 16th November for people from parishes across the
Diocese to learn more about supporting positive mental health and recovery.  This is a great opportunity in the challenging times we are living in, to gain insight to strategies and supports that could be of benefit in our families and parish life.  There is no
registration required, you will be welcome to attend and bring anyone who might
benefit with you.

VOLUNTEER WITH LIMERICK WEST SPECIAL OLYMPICS CLUB:  Limerick West Special Olympics club are seeking volunteers to accompany adult athletes on a bus from the Abbeyfeale area to Bocce training in Newcastle West and home again on Tuesday evenings.  We are also looking for volunteers to assist with bocce training (similar to bowls) each week.  Our athletes have competed at both regional and national level so you could learn a fun new game with a great group of people!  If you have some time to spare on a Tuesday evening we would be delighted to hear from you.  Drop in to the Community Centre, NCW at 7pm to meet us or ring Deirdre at 0863628629 for more information.

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT: Alzheimer’s Carers Support Group is a space where Carers can discuss their caring role, source information, and provide support for each other. If you are 65, you live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then,  because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72.  There may be some confusion over the word free -  the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring.  I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation.  Then, in year two you will also receive a bill for the monitoring fee so in year one the bill will be €90 and in year two and every other year after it will €162 approx. CAROLS AT THE GLÓRACH:  Susan Browne and the Broadford Youth Choir will perform a night of Carols on Friday, December 9.

GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT:  For the first time since 2019 we will be able to celebrate Christmas  in our parish church without any restrictions. We are delighted to announce this week the return of the annual Christmas Concert. This year we are delighted to welcome to Abbeyfeale the singing group, ‘CELTIC BROTHERS’  formally known as ‘The Willoughby Brothers’. They have entertained and endeared audiences for the past number of years and are delighted to bring their Christmas Show to the Church  of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale on Sunday 11th of December 2022. Their repertoire  features  a blend of Irish Ballads, popular classics and contemporary songs that take their audience on an emotive musical journey. The Christmas Concert in Abbeyfeale will have many seasonal songs. The funds raised from the concert will go towards the St Ita’s Hall (Hall Ide Naofa), Renovation Fund.   St Ita’s Hall is a very significant resource centre for the people of Abbeyfeale, and surrounding parishes and provides a wide range of support services for all members of the local community.   St Ita’s  Hall will be 100 years old in 2028 and significant renovations plans have been drawn up to update the building, so that it is fit for purpose and continues to serve the needs of the local community. RELAUNCH OF “A SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF RE. WILLIAM CASEY P.P.:” The relaunch  of a sketch of the life of Rev. William Casey P.P. took place on Friday night last in the Glórach Theatre in the presence of a large crowd and two of the late J.D. Harnett’s granddaughters Miriam Collins and Bridget Harnett Sheeran.  The republished book is on sale in Batts and the Siopa Milsean at a very reasonable €8 per copy.  .  Chairman of the Abbeyfeale Community Council Maurice O’Connell welcomed everyone and explained how the process began when he was searching for information to enable him to make a six minute promo video on Abbeyfeale focusing on the life of Fr. Casey.  At the same time the Castleisland Heritage Committee were working on re launching JD Harnett’s book and following on from a fact finding visit to their headquarters Maurice and the Castleisland group joined forces and last Friday nights event was the culmination of their efforts.  After a viewing of the very interesting video Maurice  introduced former Minister for Justice and MEP Gerard Collins who had been invited to launch the booklet.  Former Minister Collins then spoke as follows;  “ I wish to extend a warm welcome to the members of the Castleisland District Heritage Committee some of whose members – John Roche, John Downey, Janet Murphy and Noel Nash are with us this evening. I would like to thank them very much for the invitation extended to me to officiate at this re-launch. They are very welcome to this side of the river Feale!! As a historical committee, they have produced an extensive body of work which includes 7 journals, 3 catalogues and 200 articles, all of which can be found on their website.  Their work also includes a successful petition for the presidential pardon of John Twiss, granted by President Michael D Higgins on the 16/12/21. Their campaign for similar

presidential pardons continues – for Sylvester Poff and James Barrett.

The book we are re-launching tonight is the work of the Castleisland History Committee in collaboration with interested parties in Abbeyfeale. The original book was written by James

D Harnett and published in 1908. JD Harnett was an accomplished and successful businessman and father in law of my school teacher, Andrew Downey.

I remember JD……….tall, dignified gentleman wearing gold rimmed glasses, grey haired and wearing the old fashioned stand up collar. His brother, Richard Harnett was Provincial of the Holy Ghost Order who spoke at the 50th anniversary commemoration of Fr. Casey’s death – more of which later.  The work by JD Harnett was published well over 100 years ago. It is described by the author as a sketch of Rev. William Casey. It was in itself an unbelievable achievement given that there were no computers, tape recorders, copying machines or

Google Search!! He was totally reliant on his own memory, anecdotes from others and possibly occasional notes.  The biography of Fr. Casey is well known. His birthplace -

Castlequarter, Kilbehenny – is in Co. Limerick and not in County Cork as has been claimed!

He was the son of a tenant farmer, reared in the shadows of the Galtee mountains.It is a part of the County I know well as I was their Representative in the Dail for many years.

He arrived in Abbeyfeale in 1871 and one of his first tasks was to build a much needed wall around the Convent for the Mercy Sisters. It was a magnificent wall but one which went well

beyond his budget and his family legacy. As the son of a tenant farmer he understood very well the struggle for survival of the labourers, the lack of rights of the tenants and the hardship of losing the small amount of land they had – through evictions. The plight of those people was easily understood by him but the same injustices visited on those people moved him to action.  Interestingly enough, he also understood the role of women in

the struggle for their ownership of the land.  During this time, he established a working relationship with  Michael Davitt which was acknowledged by Davitt in a letter in1901 when he congratulated Fr. Casey on the settlement agreed on the O’Grady estate where the tenants were reinstated to their own holdings on favourable terms – thus leading his people to the final ownership of their land.  During his time in A/feale, Fr. Casey formed a Brass Band

which used to meet in the Temperance Hall down near Anthony Greaney’s property at the end of New St.  On the 18th November 1896, people became aware that it was the Silver Jubilee of his arrival in Abbeyfeale. The warmth of the appreciation and respect for Fr Casey was demonstrated when people proceeded to his house with flaming torches – in a

Celebratory procession, I hasten to add!!!  Fr Casey, a modest man, was totally unprepared for such a demonstration but was greatly appreciative of the gesture.  On the 50th anniversary of Fr Casey’s death, in 1957, a special commemorative ceremony was held in Abbeyfeale.  A parade of over a mile long from the Vocational School to the newly specially floodlit statue of Fr Casey was led by the Buttevant Brass Band.  The brother of JD Harnett, Rev Dr. Richard Harnett was given an enthusiastic welcome when he addressed the crowd. He

had been a witness to many of the evictions carried out locally and recalled many stories of  Fr. Casey who “fought the landlords” and won for the tenants. Fr. Casey was, in fact,

described by a foreign journalist as “the supplicated ruffian”  This commemoration was organised by the newly formed Abbeyfeale Development Association, led by Solicitor Richard Woulfe who presided at the ceremony in the presence of JJ Collins, TD, then Chairman of L C C, my father, and a number of the clergy.  As a young man, I was also present at that commemoration. A Radharc Programme in 1963 included contributors who, at

that time, still remembered Fr Casey and his work. Unfortunately, 65 years later, the memory of Fr. Casey is now close to extinction.  It is to be hoped that this relaunch will surely awaken new interest in Fr. Casey and his work.  I have here a cane of Fr. Casey’s which was passed to the parents or grandparents of Richard (Dick) Woulfe. It was givento my wife and I by Elaine Woulfe, Richard’s widow, for safekeeping until such time as a suitable venue can be found for it in Abbeyfeale.”  The evening then concluded with some light refreshments which were enjoyed by all.

ONE WOMAN SHOW:  Frances Kennedy, she of the great singing voice and the earthy humour is hosting a one woman show at St. John’s, Listowel on Friday, November 18.  She’ll send you home with a smile on your face.

CULTURE NIGHT AT THE GLÓRACH:  It’s been three long years, but after the successful show for Culture Night in September 2019 little did we think it would be this length of time before we hit the Glórach Boards again.  Celebrating the themes of community and culture, the show aims to celebrate the best of our culture and heritage, and will feature acclaimed local musicians and singers, and also a retelling of one of the most famous love stories of all time.  The show will take place at the Glórach Theatre on Saturday, November 19th and tickets can be booked at www.glorachabbeyfeale.com or by calling 0871383940

ABBEYFEALE’S NIGHT AT THE OSKARS: We hope to receive our first consignment of DVD’s and USB sticks  towards the middle of next week.  They will be on sale at the Day Care Centre, Batt’s in the Square and An Siopa Milsean and will make an ideal Christmas gift.  The DVD’s will retail at €10 each and the USB sticks at €15.

BRIDGE CLUB:  Abbeyfeale Bridge Club meet at St. Ita’s Day Care Centre every Thursday from 7.30pm.  New members welcome.

CARA:  Cara are all about the Creative Arts Raising Abbeyfeale – a dedicated group set up to promote and showcase Abbeyfeale through the arts.  The idea is to use the arts to lift the profile of Abbeyfeale on a local, regional and national level.  The calendar “Abbeyfeale – The Bare Essentials” is their first project.   Calendars on sale throughout the town and are currently making their way to ex pats all over the world through the [email protected] If you are looking for an unusual gift for your loved one who is far from home this Christmas this will surely put a smile on their face and they will make a collector’s item in time to come.  Sales will not only benefit the Irish Cancer Society but will enable CARA “to create a dedicated fund for future artworks and creative projects in the Abbeyfeale streetscape”.

COMMUNITY ALERT:  Tickets for our annual Christmas Party in Fr. BOOK LAUNCHES:  A local girl, Catherine Richardson formerly Catherine Fitzgerald from Knocknasna daughter of Mikie and the late Betty has just published her first book.  It’s entitled ‘The Simple Life’.  Catherine qualified as a nurse but continued with more studies in Reflexology, Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine and other therapies.    The book gives us an insight into Catherine’s life and the influences that shaped it combined with practical information – a real treasure to be read and reread.    The book is available in two well known shops ‘ An Siopa Milséan and ‘ Heavenly Gifts’.  Catherine will be launching her book in the Castle Oaks Hotel in Castleconnell on Saturday, November 19^th at 7.30pm.  The following Saturday, November 26^th she will be signing copies of the book in ‘Nature’s Hand’ – the health shop in the Crescent Shopping Centre between 11am – 1pm. Then on Saturday,November 26th, Bruach na Carraige, Rockchapel will be host to a book launch by local man Pat Mulcahy.  His book entitled ‘For God and Country’ are the memoires of the Rockchapel man as he describes his colourful and eventful life spanning his start in Jersey during WW2, life in the US in the army and NYPD and his return to his native County Cork.  Pat was co-founder of Project Children, an organisation responsible for bringing over 23,000 children from the troubles of Northern Ireland to the US for a six week break. The launch begins at 8pm with entertainment from local musicians followed by refreshments.  All proceeds will go to Rockchapel NS and Bruach na Carraige.  Pat’s mother was Eileen Mulcahy (nee Moriarty) from Caherlane, Abbeyfeale. It’s a very small world as Pat’s wife, Kathleen Beirne whom he met in the US is my neighbour from Co. Longford .

Grow Mental Health Information Session, Wednesday 16th November, 7pm to 8:30pm, at Grow offices, 33 Henry Street, Limerick.Grow is a mental health charity that provides free, friendly, community based, peer support groups for anyone who is experiencing a mental health issue.  Sharon Kleiser (Grow volunteer and
participant in our Lay Pastoral Ministry Programme), along with Mary Purcell (Grow Midwest Manager) and Amie Hughes (Grow Midwest Coordinator) are offering an information session on Wed 16th November for people from parishes across the
Diocese to learn more about supporting positive mental health and recovery.  This is a great opportunity in the challenging times we are living in, to gain insight to strategies and supports that could be of benefit in our families and parish life.  There is no

But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then,  because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72.  There may be some confusion over the word free -  the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring.  I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation.  Then, in year two you will also receive a bill for the monitoring fee so in year one the bill will be €90 and in year two and every other year after it will €162 approx. RELAUNCH OF “A SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF RE. WILLIAM CASEY P.P.:” It’s been 114 years since J.D. Harnett’s book “A Sketch of the Life of Rev William Casey P.P. of Abbeyfeale” was first published in 1908, following the death of Fr. Casey himself in December 1907.  Copies of the original book are extremely rare and difficult to come by, and yet so sought after that a collaborative approach between different individuals and Groups on either side of the Limerick / Kerry border has now resulted in the research and republishing of this iconic biography, along with some additional content and images.
Endearingly referred to as the “Peoples Priest” and well known for attracting thousands of people at monster meetings during the late 1800′s / early 1900′s, Fr Casey was a national icon and a passionate promoter of The National Land League and the fight for tenants’ rights.

Special guests will be in attendance and refreshments will be served on the night.

The relaunching of “A Sketch of the Life of Rev William Casey P.P. of Abbeyfeale” will take place at the Glórach Theatre, Convent Rd, Abbeyfeale V94 H9C8 on Friday, November 11 at 7.30pm.   Doors open at 7pm and all are welcome.

ONE WOMAN SHOW:  Frances Kennedy, she of the great singing voice and the earthy humour is hosting a one woman show at St. John’s, Listowel on Friday, November 18.  She’ll send you home with a smile on your face.

LOST SOULS AT THE GLÓRACH:  Heavenly harmonies will be the order of the evening at the Glórach Theatre on Saturday, November 12th as the Lost Souls take to the stage.  The group are no strangers to the venue, nor to the Abbeyfeale public who have seen them in memorable gigs in the past in McEnery’s Bar and the Church.  Over the past eleven years the group has cultivated a wide following, with their tight musicianship, soaring vocals and easygoing style.  Mixing it up on guitars will be Dr Mick O’Donnell and Gary O’Keeffe, with D Dennison keeping a steady rhythm on bass.  The Abbeyfeale version of ‘The Commitments’ singers is made up of Noreen Cotter, Orla Dennison, Martina McAuliffe and Kelly Hartnett, with the possibility of a few guest appearances by other acclaimed local vocalists during the night.  Covering artists as diverse as Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor and the Cranberries to name but a few, the Lost Souls always put a unique stamp on the songs and very definitely make them their own.  Always open to experimentation, they stunned patrons at the concert for Ukraine last May with their electric version of ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ by Pink Floyd, a definite first in the Church of the Assumption!  Expect an eclectic mix this Saturday as the Lost Souls make a welcome return to a venue ideally suited to their sound.  Don’t be disappointed and make sure to book tickets at www.glorachabbeyfeale.com or by calling 0871383940.

GLÓRACH RUMOURS WRITTEN BY JOHN NELLIGAN: ‘ Those of you who’ve been following my Glórach Rumours column will have noticed its absence from last week’s paper. Well, wonder no more, as I will now reveal how I’ve been scammed, so to speak, throughout this whole business. My mole has confessed that after a particularly busy day working on the grounds of Glórach,he suffered sunstroke, which affected him in numerous ways – one of which was a bad case of Bobby Ewing syndrome. For those of you who are unfamiliar with that particular syndrome, should Google “Dallas, Bobby Ewing shower scene”. In any event the upshot of the affliction for my mole was that he would wake up from a dream, every Friday morning that appeared so real to him that he believed that the detail of the dreams must have occurred in real time. So, the fallout from his nocturnal ramblings is that we’ve all been misled in a most egregious fashion. I’ve told him that to mislead a respected and long-standing member of the Press, such as myself, is quite unforgiveable and that there may be consequences for him.  Further investigation on my part has determined that there is a film project in the offing titled “Abbeyfeale on Film &amp; In Context” and that it will be screened at Glórach on the following dates: Nov 24 th , 25 th &amp; 30 th and Dec 1 st &amp; 10 th at 8pm. Tickets cost €10. Booking on either telephone 087 1383940 or on-line at glorachabbeyfeale.com With the cost of production and promotion having been sponsored, it means that all ticket proceeds will go the 8 local churches, each receiving 10% of the take, and Glórach receiving the remaining 20%. So, this is an event that is well deserving of your support. It is being described as 85 minutes of both film and content that captures the people, events and circumstances that guided our journey to where we are today. The description that accompanies the publicity material is as follows: “When the timecomes for the history of Abbeyfeale, across the early and middle parts of the last century of the last millennium, to be written, it will draw heavily from the content that is now available for viewing in our film.  If, as we’re told, a static picture paints a thousand words, then a moving picture – as films were first described – has the facility to capture and convey an ethos that would, otherwise, require a billion words to describe! Ours is such a film, in that it contains 50 minutes of quality footage that looks at life, in its many and various forms, in Abbeyfeale, through first-hand accounts of the, then, contemporary and historic events, that moulded a people, a community and a nation. The remaining 35 minutes will depict in words, music and film footage, Sunday observance, entertainment on the Sabbath, the plight of the emigrant, the despair of the dispossessed and marginalised, the impact of the Easter Rising and, finally, how our National Anthem – as Béarla agus Gaelige – came into being.The flame of freedom, for Ireland, was doused with water on many occasions – but never quenched. It, now, behoves the generations born in the 1950s and thereafter, to reacquaint ourselves with our local and national history so that we may imbue our families and friends with a history of the struggles of our ancestors, whose valour and unceasing pursuit of a Republic for Ireland enables us to enjoy the unfettered freedom that is now our privilege.”I’m told to expect a piece for next week’s paper, which, believe it or not, will draw on Skakespeare’s many references to Abbeyfeale and the film in question in some of his soliloquys. I’m agog with anticipation – although such a tale wouldn’t be out of place in an Eamon Kelly, seanchaí story. Finally, our condolence to the family of Eamon Kelly, on the recent death of Maura Kelly, a fine actress, whose performances on stage were a pleasure to behold.’

BOOK LAUNCHES:  A local girl, Catherine Richardson formerly Catherine Fitzgerald from Knocknasna daughter of Mikie and the late Betty has just published her first book.  It’s entitled ‘The Simple Life’.  Catherine qualified as a nurse but continued with more studies in Reflexology, Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine and other therapies.    The book gives us an insight into Catherine’s life and the influences that shaped it combined with practical information – a real treasure to be read and reread.    The book is available in two well known shops ‘ An Siopa Milséan and ‘ Heavenly Gifts’.  Catherine will be launching her book in the Castle Oaks Hotel in Castleconnell on Saturday, November 19^th at 7.30pm.  The following Saturday, November 26^th she will be signing copies of the book in ‘Nature’s Hand’ – the health shop in the Crescent Shopping Centre between 11am – 1pm. Then on Saturday,November 26th, Bruach na Carraige, Rockchapel will be host to a book launch by local man Pat Mulcahy.  His book entitled ‘For God and Country’ are the memoires of the Rockchapel man as he describes his colourful and eventful life spanning his start in Jersey during WW2, life in the US in the army and NYPD and his return to his native County Cork.  Pat was co-founder of Project Children, an organisation responsible for bringing over 23,000 children from the troubles of Northern Ireland to the US for a six week break. The launch begins at 8pm with entertainment from local musicians followed by refreshments.  All proceeds will go to Rockchapel NS and Bruach na Carraige.  Pat’s mother was Eileen Mulcahy (nee Moriarty) from Caherlane, Abbeyfeale. It’s a very small world as Pat’s wife, Kathleen Beirne whom he met in the US is my neighbour from Co. Longford .

BRIDGE CLUB:  Abbeyfeale Bridge Club meet at St. Ita’s Day Care Centre every Thursday from 7.30pm.  New members welcome.

CARA:  Cara are all about the Creative Arts Raising Abbeyfeale – a dedicated group set up to promote and showcase Abbeyfeale through the arts.  The idea is to use the arts to lift the profile of Abbeyfeale on a local, regional and national level.  The calendar “Abbeyfeale – The Bare Essentials” is their first project.   Calendars on sale throughout the town and are currently making their way to ex pats all over the world through the [email protected] They will make a collector’s item in time to come.  Sales will not only benefit the Irish Cancer Society but will enable CARA “to create a dedicated fund for future artworks and creative projects in the Abbeyfeale streetscape”.

But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then,  because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72.  There may be some confusion over the word free -  the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring.  I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us.
