LECTURE ON U.S. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: When the United States votes to elect a new president on Tuesday next, November 8 it will be choosing not only a head of state but also a head of government and a commander-in-chief of the largest military on the planet. When all the votes are counted either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will be the 45th president of the United States. Tim Kaine or Mike Pence will be the 48th vice-president.If elected, Hillary Clinton, will become the first female president. Donald Trump will become the oldest president to take office if he is the winner. Both candidates live in New York – Trump in New York City and Clinton in Chappaqua thirty miles north of the city. Hillary is a former Secretary of State and serving US Senator while Donald is a businessman and reality TV personality. George Washington was elected first US President in 1788 when only white men who owned property could vote. On Tuesday next all US citizens over 18 have the right to vote. Voting will take place in all 50 states and in Washington D.C. With a turnout of 57.5% in 2012 the total number of votes cast was just over 126 millions. This year’s election has been described as a race in which fiction has been treated as fact, insults as compliments and conventional wisdom has been proven wrong again and again. On this Friday night, November 4 Rathkeale & District Historical Society will host a lecture entitled “The 2016 US Presidential Election” in the Arts Centre which is within the Rathkeale area offices of Limerick City and County Council at 8.30pm. The guest speaker will be Professor Gary O’Brien who is Associate Vice President Administration at Mary Immaculate College Limerick. A diplomatic historian whose PhD dissertation was on the Soviet policy of the US Reagan Administration, he is uniquely qualified to untangle all the rhetoric and all the goings-on in an attempt to better understand the serious business of choosing the next leader of the United States. The Arts Centre is accessible by lift and by stairs. All are welcome.
MONAGAE TEA DANCE: Micheal Sexton will perform at the monthly tea dance for the upkeep of Monagae Community Hall on Sunday next, November 6. Dancing 3-6 with teas served.
MEENKILLY CARD GAME: Breastcare Unit Fundraiser. The card game will commence on Tuesday, November 8 at 9pm (sharp). All proceeds on the night will be donated to Breastcare Unit, Limerick University Hospital. Looking forward to seeing all the regular (and new) card players on the night. The weekly card game is a very important fundraiser for the school and over the years it has contributed hugely to the resources enjoyed by the pupils. COFFEE OR TEA: A coffee afternoon will take place on Tuesday, November 8 from 1.30pm-2.30pm in Meenkilly N.S. in aid of Breastcare Unit, Limerick University Hospital. Call in for a cup of tea or coffee, a snack and a chat with the neighbours, and support this very worthy cause.
COMMUNITY ALERT HOSTS CHRISTMAS PARTY: We hope, in conjunction with Abbeyfeale active retired group to hold a Christmas party for Abbeyfeale parish residents aged 65 and over on Sunday, November 27 in the Day Centre, Convent St. from 1-5pm. Our community Garda Roger O’Donoghue will be present to give a short talk on how to keep safe in your home over the winter. A three course meal consisting of Turkey and Ham, choice of deserts and tea/coffee will be served and it is planned to have an afternoon of dancing to Gerard Conaghan. There is seating for 82 persons and tickets at €10 each can be purchased from Bridie Scully Collins, Mary Mc Gill (Abbeyfeale Active Retired) or Mary McArthur, Marian Harnett (Abbeyfeale Community Alert).
The text alert system is up and running at long last and signs will shortly be erected at the parish boundaries with the telephone number of Abbeyfeale Garda Station (068 30010). If you are worried about someone who calls to your door or you see a vehicle around the area or someone drives into your yard then you should ring 068 30010, the call will be answered by NCW Gardai who man a 24 hour telephone line. If they feel that your concerns merit further investigation then they will contact the company who will send out an alert by text to all those signed up to receive it. When you receive a text you should forward this to all the contacts in your phone so that the word gets disseminated throughout the community. These alerts will then enable other people in the community to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour. If you would like to receive these warning texts then contact any member of the committee who on receipt of €10 (to help pay for the on-going cost of the texts) will take your number and sign you up. ABBEYFEALE MENS SHED: Fire Officers from Abbeyfeale Fire Station will attend a meeting of the Abbeyfeale Mens Shed Group at their premises at the Adult Education Centre on Monday, November 7 at 7pm. The Fire Officers will give a presentation and advice on fire safety in the home and answer questions from the floor. All members of the public are invited to attend.

‘FALLING GRADIENT’ ON SALE IN ABBEYFEALE: A new book, titled “Falling Gradient”, which tells the story of all the railway routes that served Limerick has just been launched. It has been written and self-published by Joe Coleman, of Meelick, Co. Clare, whose family had many connections with the railway. Joe has filled his 450+ pages with an amount of stories and an excellent selection of photographs. Joe is an active supporter of the Great Southern Trail as his father was an engine driver on the line. The book is an easy read and is available in West Limerick from the NCW Book Shop in Newcastle West and from Ann Lyons in Abbeyfeale.

RURAL SOCIAL SCHEME: West Limerick Resources in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection implement the Rural Social Scheme in West Limerick. The scheme aims to provide part time flexible employment opportunities to low income farmers by utilising their skills and talents on community and not for profit projects. If you are: (a) currently in receipt of Farm Assist, (b) have a herd number, a copy of your Single Farm Payment application and are in receipt of a qualifying payment from social welfare (www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Rural-Social-Scheme.aspx) then you (or your spouse) could benefit from the scheme in return for 19.5 hours of work in the community, (c) you will also be contributing to a class A stamp while on the scheme. Work is available in all areas with hours to fit in with your farming needs. The following people are also permitted to participate in the scheme: children or siblings of a qualifying herd owner provided they meet the necessary qualifying criteria.
