#RED WEDNESDAY: On Wednesday, November 22 next, in order to promote awareness and solidarity with persecuted Christians, we have been invited by Archbishop Eamon Martin and A.C.N Ireland to pray the Angelus at 12pm and 6pm in remembrance of both past and present martyrs and to wear a red tie or a red scarf as a symbolic reminder of all Christians who have suffered and died for their Christian faith.

Next month, our classic film club will be returning with a screening of the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet on the first Wednesday in December. With that in mind, Glórach has invited his Excellency Michael D Higgins to attend an event in Glórach if his calendar permits, for as well as being a poet, he is also an avid soccer fan and supporter of Galway United. Bingo continues on Monday nights at 8.30 pm. It has been very well received to date and we would like to say a big thank you to all our Bingo patrons.

LIGHT UP ABBEYFEALE. Secretary of the Christmas Lights committee Hilary Collins writes: “It is exactly one year since the new Christmas Lights Committee was formed in Leen’s Hotel. The new committee comprised Denis Collins, Marie McElligott, Jimmy Cahill, Esther McElligott, Kevin Kennelly, Gerardine O’Brien and Hilary Colliins.What little Christmas Lights stock we inherited was in bad shape and it was 3 weeks to switch on – if indeed we were going to have anything to switch on!!
We soldiered ahead and put up what we had. The result was decidedly underwhelming. The New Year had the desired effect and we set about organising the gathering of money and the purchasing of new features. We had great fun poring over catalogues of magnificent Christmas lights as we tried to keep within a certain budget. We started with a wonderful donation from the Strictly Come Dancing Event that had been held a few months previously but it was really just the beginning. The capital outlay on something like this is huge and, as a committee, we decided that we would not go into debt but we would have lots of plans to light up Abbeyfeale in a way that would make the town pleasing to the eye!! Right now, the features are going up on the poles. Unfortunately, the ESB does not take kindly to their poles being used, so for this year, we are only using the poles that belong to the County Council. With Jimmy and Denis leading the team – out working every evening, we had to ensure that we had good Insurance – expensive Insurance, as it turns out! We asked Doody Engineering, Abbeyfeale, to create a tree for us – one that would not wear away and have to be replaced in 4/5 years. What we will have now should last for 50 years!! We are about to put thousands of bulbs on it. It should be so bright, it will be seen from Mars!! We have plans for more lights next year. We would like to extend some nice lights down New Street and Bridge Street but in the meantime we are having funfilled fundraisers. On November 18, in Jack Ryan’s there is a Donkey Derby, there is a Tea Dance in Fr. Casey’s GAA on Sunday, November 26 and later on that evening there is a Darts Night in the Ploughman. Our great switch on is at 5.45pm on Friday, December 1. We have 2 young local high achievers doing the honours for us – Kori Goad and Chris Smith. After that, Santa will arrive and he and Mrs. Claus will meet local children in the Grotto. That night, in Mick’s Local, there will be a big Christmas Party to start everyone off for the festive season. Our last fundraiser for the moment is a Pub Quiz at Matt McCoy’s on Friday, December 8 with lots of facts and fun and spot prizes.

COMPLAINTS RE: DOG FOULING: There has been a number of complaints recently about dog fouling on footpaths and on the Great Southern Trail. We have also been told that a number of dogs are being walked without a leash on the trail. The authorities at Limerick Co. Council have been informed.

MASS FOR ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS: World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is on Saturday, November 18 and Mass will be celebrated for all those who have lost their lives on that evening at 7pm.

ST. ITA’S DAYCARE CENTRE: The Day Care Centre located near the Church and beside the Glórach Theatre hosts two open days every week. An open invitation has been issued to anyone who would like to join them for a four course lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays followed by dancing, bingo, cards and afternoon tea. The cost is just €10 per person. They also say that the Day Care Centre Bus and care are available to provide transport where possible.
WEST LIMERICK HERITAGE NETWORK JOURNAL: The Networks second journal is now on sale in local shops and pubs. This Journal would make an ideal gift, especially for family members, far from home this Christmas. It comprises 32 articles relating to local history and local people. A good read is guaranteed.

Names of parishioners, deceased during the past 12 months will be read out during Mass. Leave a light on in the house when you go out, lock all windows and doors. Invest in a house alarm. Make sure that you have a sensor light that comes on if someone comes into the yard and also lights around the house. Check the battery in your flash light and have it to hand rather than candles which can be dangerous. . If you have a panic button from Community Alert this is a good time to check its battery. Wear it on your wrist – if you trip and fall or feel dizzy or sick or are frightened by a caller press the button. The monitoring company will answer immediately and get one of your nominated contacts to go to you if necessary. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert but there will be a monitoring fee to be paid yearly to the installing company, this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80. If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56. This works out cheaper that the rent of the landline which is currently €25 per month. There are new terms and conditions recently announced, one of which is that the first year of monitoring will be free. DANCE IN DEVON INN: There will be a a fundraising dance in aid of The Hope Foundation organised by students in Hazelwood College who are travelling to Calcutta next Spring.
