BOOK FLUID FORMS – LIAM FLYNN: We are going online with a crowd funding campaign to fund the publication of a full colour limited edition hard back book featuring the artwork of wood turner and artist Liam Flynn. This 118 page coffee table style book will feature over 85 images of Liam’s work. Essays by Roger Bennet and Yvonne McEnery.

YOUTH CLUB FUNDRAISER: The Pope John Paul II Award is a faith achievement award for young people between the age of 16 and 18. It is non-competitive, inclusive, flexible and voluntary. The Award is committed to helping young people enhance their spiritual, physical, emotional and social development through participation in school, parish and community activities. As well as the feeling of personal achievement that a participant will gain from taking part in the Award, participation will help demonstrate the young person’s commitment to a task and goal. As part of their involvement in the John Paul 11 awards a number of members of Abbeyfeale youth club along with their leaders have started to work on in the garden at the side of the curate’s house and are planning to sell the produce during the summer and donate the money raised to charity.
Fr. Shoji, our curate for the next three years, is in charge of watering and is having a pastoral visit from his Bishop in India so the first sale will be to support the Bishops projects and will take place at both Masses on Sunday, May 12 which the Bishop will be saying. We hope to have lettuce plants, herbs, sunflower and pumpkin plants along with jams, buns and a few surprises. Your support will be most welcome.
CRAFT FAIR: Feale Crafters will be hosting a craft fair at St. Ita’s Hall on Saturday, May 4 from 11-3pm.
HARNETT REUNION: A committee meeting has been called for Thursday, May 9 in St. Ita’s Hall at 9pm. New members always welcome. They’re coming from the four corners for the second reunion of the Harnett clan July 11-14. Orange Day is even cancelled as there will be so many Harnetts travelling from the North. Carina Prendeville is currently working on our magazine and is looking for family pictures, stories, histories. You can contact her on [email protected]
We have a full programme organised for our visitors but it is also open to anyone to join us. We will have booking details shortly. There will be genealogy, bus tours, a concert, a gala banquet and a memorial Mass, all at different venues around West Limerick/North Kerry. Please spread the word far and wide. The event is open to everybody, whether Harnett, Hartnett or other and we are looking forward to a great weekend July 11-14.
REMEMBERING ZOE:. The Cycle Challenge will take place on Sunday, May 12 commencing in Fr. Casey’s GAA Grounds, Abbeyfeale at 9am and cycling through scenic parts of West Limerick, North Kerry and North Cork. There will be 3 cycle routes: 50km, 85km and120km. There will also be a 5K Fun Run/Walk and a new 10K Run.
DOG SHOW: The annual fundraiser for the Town Park takes place on Sunday, May 19 in the Town Park at 2pm. Everyone welcome.
ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE: Harvest fresh produce from our Poly Tunnel. Then learn how to prepare, store and cook it within the Skills Demonstration Kitchen. Class started on Tuesday, April 30 and will run from 9.30 – 12.30pm for the next 4 Tuesdays. For more information call the office: 06831198.
AFTERNOON TEA DANCE: There will be an afternoon tea dance in Fr. Casey’s on Sunday, May 19 with dancing to Mike Condon. All funds will go to Laura O’Donoghue’s volunteering trip to Zambia with Suas.
OPEN DAY AT ST. ITA’S DAY CARE AND SHELTERED HOUSING: There was a fine turn out for the unveiling of a monument to the late Canon Neville whose idea it was to set up the sheltered housing and day care centre. Sculptor Rhuairi Dennison can be justly proud of his work which has been placed in a prominent position on the lawn outside the Day Care Centre for all to see and admire. It will serve to remind visitors and services users alike of the hard work of Canon Neville who identified a need and set to work to satisfy it. Dr. Micheal O’Donnell the current chairman of the voluntary Board thanked all who had served since its inception twenty years ago. He gave a special mention to deceased members of the voluntary board – Eileen O’Brien, Phyl O’Kelly and Catherine Lyons and Canon Neville who worked so hard over the years. He also mentioned retired councillors Micheal O’Kelly and Sean Broderick who worked together for the past 20 years and who have now retired. He called on “our local councillors seeking re – election to pledge their unwavering support to the Centre and its future development. Dr. O’Donnell also announced the reopening of the Day Care Centre following a short closure due to the withdrawal of funding by the DEASP and said that plans were in train to organise a major fundraiser to address the shortfall in funding, details of which will be announced shortly. After the unveiling of the sculpture by Eithne Neville – the late Canon’s sister and retired Cllr.Sean Broderick, refreshments were served to the large crowd with music being provided by some of the regular users of the centre. Later that night the group Lost Souls entertained a capacity audience in the Winners Circle at a fundraising event.
SINGING CLUB: Deidre Scanlon will be the special guest at the May session of West Limerick Singing Club which takes place during Fleadh by the Feale in the Ramble Inn. Singers, storytellers and listeners welcome from 9pm.
ALZHEIMER’S TEA DAY: Madeline O’Connor in association with the Wednesday club is holding a tea day on behalf of above society on Wednesday May 1 at St.Ita’s Hall, Main St. Abeyfeale. from 10. 30 -1. 30pm.We will have a raffle on the day for some lovely prizes. Come in and enjoy a cuppa with some of our dainty treats. All money raised is used to support people in the area with dementia. Your support would be much appreciated.
FLEADH BY THE FEALE 2019: It’s finally here – the 25th annual Fleadh by the Feale. Abbeyfeale is gearing up for one of the biggest weekends of the year with people travelling from all over Ireland and further afield to attend and some to participate in Fleadh by the Feale over the May Bank Holiday . The Celebrity concert this year is headlined by The Kilfenora Ceili Band who are celebrating 120 years on the road and who recently launched a new album. Ticket €25 Junior €12.50 (must be accompanied by an adult). Some of the many highlights include Oiche Gaelige in Thomas TJ’s Thursday night, May 2 as well as the Art Competition prize giving in the Library. The Street Busking and the Ceili with Donie Nolan in Fr. Casey’s on Friday as well as the Wrenboys on the Gig Rig will get proceeding off to a rollicking start. There will also be the monthly Singing Session in The Ramble Inn from 9.30pm on Friday night. Then on Saturday, May 4 there is a full day of Workshops, a youth trad session in Donal and Anns, a Sliabh Luachra session in Leen’s Hotel, more entertainment on the gig rig with the Templeglantine Comhaltas Group and Scully’s Music School, Newmarket and of course, need I say, spontaneous sessions could spring up anywhere so a pub trail is in order. Sunday, May 5 is another full on day between social dancing/ceili dancing in the Square from 2pm (indoor venue on standby if it rains), Storytelling at St. Ita’s Hall at 3pm, Tournafulla Comhaltas on the gig rig, a tribute to the late Dan Murphy whose brainchild the Fleadh by the Feale was and then the highlight of the weekend the Kilfenora Ceili Band in Colaiste Ide agus Iosef. Monday; another Ceili in the Square (indoor venue on standby if it rains), a workshop on Bone playing, more entertainment on the gig rig and then the All Ireland Bone Playing competitions. Tickets for the celebrity concert available in the Health Food store and Murphy’s Tiles and on the door on the night.

COMMUNITY ALERT NOTES: The annual church gate collection takes place on the May Bank Holiday weekend with funds collected going towards the summer outing and Christmas lunch. If someone comes to your house and you feel uncomfortable around them press your panic button – the fact that someone starts asking are you all right should help to move them on. There are many ways that the panic button can come in handy and that’s one of them but you must be wearing it for it to be effective. Minding it on top of the dresser won’t be much use if you’re laid out on the hall floor after tripping over a pair of shoes. There is a story on Radio Kerry these days about the lads that called to an elderly man in Tralee and told him that they’d clean his drains for €40 then after marya cleaning them returned to say they’d found extra stuff that needed doing. Anyway he was persuaded to part with €800 so be very wary of callers offering to help you out. If you have a smart phone, download the Cairde App from Muintir Na Tire which gives alerts and information. If you are away on holidays do not post pictures on FB until you return so that people are unaware that your house is unoccupied. Invest in a light timer switch too. heard a story this week about an elderly lady out for a walk in town who asked a group of young lads to move in order that she could walk on the pavement and who was shouted at and verbally abused and who now feels that she cannot go out for a walk on the main street. If that ever happens to you or to anyone belonging to you please ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and report it – if the Gardai don’t know these things happen then they cannot nip it in the bud. Senior Help Line is a free confidential listening service provided by trained older volunteers on 1800804591and its open daily from 10am – 10pm. So if you’re older and want information or just to hear a friendly voice then gives them a call. You can also register with West Limerick Resources on 069 62222 who provide a locally based service. Keep an eye on our FB page which is updated daily with all the latest on scams, money making rackets and fast ones. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €66. Please note that this fee is payable in a lump sum each year after year one. On the weekend of May 11/12 we will welcome Bishop George Rajendran SDB. Bishop George is bishop of the diocese of Thuckalay, in South West India. Fr Shoji who recently came to live and minister in Abbeyfeale is a priest of the diocese of Thuckalay. Bishop George is on a fundraising mission to Ireland and will be making an appeal for funds towards the running of two schools in his diocese that specifically cater for mentally and physically challenged children.
