RAMBLING HOUSE:  The monthly rambling house in Fr. Casey’s organised by Benny Thade McCarthy resumes on Monday, September 3 with proceeds to the Abbeyfeale Chernobyl Fund.

SUPPORTING ABBEYFEALE:  Please support the small businesses in our town so as to enable them to stay open.  Don’t forget that they are the shop owners that support us when we are out looking for sponsorship to keep our sports clubs and youth facilities open.  They are the people who are always willing to come up with a voucher or a bottle of wine for a spot prize but if we don’t support them they’ll all be gone.  So the next time you want to buy an outfit or something for the house see what’s available in town first before heading for the city.  Buying the basics like toilet rolls, milk, bread, newspapers, soap etc. in a small shop means a lot to them and helps keep the money circulating in the area.

BRUACH NA CARRAIGE:  The popular Rockchapel Seisiun continues at Bruach Na Carraige each Tuesday night at 9pm.   You can hear some of Ireland`s oldest music being played, some of it going back to before 1850 and much of which has vanished over the last hundred years. You will also see some of Ireland`s oldest solo traditional step dances that have also almost vanished being performed. Bruach Na Carraige is the only venue in Ireland where you will hear this music, and see these dances performed.  Bring your instrument or dancing shoes as there will be an opportunity for audience participation.  Our Sliabh Luachra summer school is on from August 8-10 starting at 10am.    The emphasis will be on music from the old manuscripts some dating back to before 1850. Participants on the scheme work 19.5hrs per week and receive a top up payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. To participate on the scheme you must fulfil the following criteria: Be actively farming over 1 hectare of land; Have a valid herd number; Proof of application for the EU Basic Payment Scheme for the current year and be in receipt of Farm Assist, Jobseekers Allowance or other qualifying payments.  Spouses, children, brothers and sisters of the herd owner can also join the scheme if they meet relevant criteria.  Only one person allowed per herd number.  For further details contact Tom or Michelle at West Limerick Resources on 069-61316 or Email:  [email protected].  Successful eligible candidates will be placed on a panel from which vacancies will be filled.

TIPS ON CONSERVING WATER:  Place a full litre bottle of water in the cistern in the toilet which will reduce the volume of water at each flush.  Have shorter showers – an average shower uses 10 litres of water per minute, turn off the tap when washing your teeth.  Use a basin to wash the ware and then use the water for watering the flowers.  Washing up liquid will do no harm to the plants and vegetable water will add nutrients to the soil.  Pour the cold tea out of the pot on the vegetables.  Only do a wash when you have a full load.  Invest in a water butt under the down pipe.

TIPS FOR SUMMER SECURITY FROM IFA:  Don’t forget about home and farm security during the good weather, Limerick man and IFA Deputy President Richard Kennedy has advised.

“It is important to be vigilant about your home and farm security during the summer when homes are more likely to be unoccupied or accessible. Never assume that because you are at home or nearby, your farm or property is safe,” Richard advises.

Ten tips to keep your home and farm secure this summer

Lock windows on the ground floor level.

Ensure that, if you are opening windows on the first floor, they cannot be entered from a porch, drain pipe or a ladder left out.

Be clever about how you lock up and when going to bed at night; make sure that if you are leaving a window open, it is not accessible.

If you are working in the farmyard or garden, make sure you have locked all the doors and windows to your home as you may be easily distracted in your work

If you are working with power tools or gardening equipment be extra vigilant as you may not hear a person entering your property.

Carry a key with you; don’t be tempted to leave the key under a pot or stone near the door

If you are to the rear of the property your home may appear to be unoccupied which might draw a criminal’s attention

Consider setting the alarm if you feel that you may get distracted in your work or nod off while relaxing.

When you are finished working outside, make sure to put away the power tools and machinery. Take a few minutes to ensure the safety of your property.

Mark your property – overt and covert markings will deter criminals and can help to reunite you with stolen property if it is stolen and subsequently recovered.

BOOK LAUNCH:  A large gathering assembled at the Longcourt House Hotel, Newcastle West on Friday last, June 29 for the much anticipated launch of a first collection of short stories by local man, Pat McLoughlin. The book, To Weave with Words, was launched by Patrick O’ Donovan TD, Minister of State at the Department of Finance and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. Sheila O’ Regan, who was MC for the event, spoke in glowing terms about universal and eclectic content of the fifteen stories. Dr Paddy Fullam described the book as a superb mixture of humour and tragedy, of harmony and strife, of love and conflict and of loneliness and companionship. Minister O’ Donovan spoke about the clever plots and the twist in the tail of every story. He also highlighted the enormous contribution that Pat and his family had made to the local community. Dominic Taylor from the Limerick Writers’ Centre outlined the tremendous service that the Centre provides to the aspiring writers of the region. Sheila O’ Regan brought the launch to its conclusion by reading messages of congratulations from people who were unable to attend. The author, Pat McLoughlin, who was joined on the night by his family, said he was humbled by the enormous turnout and was amazed that the first print of his book was almost sold out. He also said that whatever profit he makes from the proceeds will go to the Friends of St Ita’s Hospital.
