Murphy (nee Barrett)(New Street, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick and formerly of Leens Hotel)-December 15th. 2017, Madeline, beloved wife of the late Dan and loving mother of Brigid, Trish, Denis and Brian; grandmother of Siobhán, Leen, Deirdre, Tess, Ailbhe, Adam and Rebecca; sadly missed by her family, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, neighbours and many friends.

R.I.P.

Reposing at Harnett’s Funeral Home Abbeyfeale on Sunday from 7.45 p.m. followed by removal at 9.00 p.m. to Church of the Assumption Abbeyfeale. Requiem Mass on Monday at 11.00 a.m. Funeral afterwards to Reilig Íde Naofa Abbeyfeale. Family flowers only please.

SUPPORT OUR OWN: Just a reminder that in order to keep money circulating in the local economy we need to shop locally, socialise locally and eat out locally over the festive season. There are family connections to Muhammad Ali here so who’s to say Donald Trump won’t turn out to be from West Limerick too.

WEST LIMERICK HERITAGE NETWORK JOURNAL: The Networks second journal is now on sale in local shops and pubs. This Journal would make an ideal gift, especially for family members, far from home this Christmas. It comprises 32 articles relating to local history and local people. A good read is guaranteed.

ABBEYFEALE FOR AFRICA: The annual cake sale in aid of Fr. Tim Galvin’s Mission in South Sudan was a huge success and we’d like to thank everyone for their support – especially the bakers and jam makers, the helpers and the buyers and Fr. Tony for the use of St. Ita’s Hall. Fr. Tim recently sent an email and we paraphrase it here; “I’m well thanks. Earlier in the year we had a bad drought. Thanks be to God since the end of July we have received decent rain. The countryside is green now rather than brown. In July opposition forces came to our area and there was fear among us and the people that there would be fighting. We evacuated the parish and closed the school for one week. The opposition forces passed by on their way to Ethiopia. Thankfully nothing bad happened. No fighting took place and we returned to the parish and reopened the school after one week. We started a project here a couple of months ago. We constructed a green house. Then a young man from Watergrashill in Co. Cork who works in Kenya came to put down pipes with drip irrigation. We have planted crops like onions, cabbage, carrots, kale, tomatoes, cowpeas, maize and green peppers. Unfortunately the maize didn’t germinate well, we are still waiting for the green peppers to show themselves but all others are doing well as well as weeds of course. I’m excited about this project. We get our tomatoes onions from a place in Kenya about 700 kilometres away so you can imagine the carbon footprint of that. This should add also to the nutrition standards for the school children who will benefit from these vegetables. We have nearly 400 school children with twice as many boys as girls. They top class will go to st 6 in 2018. There are three more years remaining before they finish their primary education.
I will finish here by wishing all the bakers and supporters a very happy and peaceful Christmas and every blessing for 2018. I pray for you all and you pray for me.”

GLÓRACH NOTES: PRO Lorcan Curtin says “Due to the children’s drama show with Jo Jordan taking place at the Glórach on the evening of Monday next, December 18 our next night of Bingo won’t take place until January 1, 2018. Thanks to everyone who has supported this venture to date, as mentioned before all monies raised from our Monday night Bingo will go towards resurfacing of the Car Park and also towards the insulation of the Glórach building. Thanks to all who attended our screening last Wednesday of the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet. Often cited as the finest adaptation of the Shakespearean classic, it was easy to see why, with two radiant leads, rich colours throughout and extremely well shot sword fighting scenes. We are scheduled to return in the New Year with a more recent release, the acclaimed 2015 film, Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan, whilst on the music front, much interest has been expressed in the Sean Keane concert, which will be taking place on Friday, May 4 next year. FOURTH ANNUAL CONNIE HARNETT MEMORIAL SWIM: The fourth annual swim takes place in Ballybunion on Monday, January 1 at 1pm. Funds raised will go to the Cardiology Unit in Crumlin Childrens’ Hospital with donations being made to the Hope Foundation and the Lourdes Youth Group. There will be a raffle on the day and hot food will be served in Thomasins, Lisselton.

COMMUNITY ALERT: Please keep an eye on elderly neighbours, it need only be a telephone call or just dropping in for a few minutes on your way home from work but showing that you care could mean the world to someone. If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday. The minute you buy something in the line of electrical goods, machinery, bicycles, quads find the serial no. and record it even if it was only on a sticker on the inside door of a press. Muintir Na Tire have a log book for sale for just a fiver that you can use to make a record of all you possess and they are available from any member of Abbeyfeale Community Alert. If you see anything that makes you wonder if thieves are casing the area like a car that seems to be travelling around several times ring Abbeyfeale Station on 068 30010. If the Gardai on duty are out on patrol the call will be patched through to NCW who will call the car back to town. There was a glut of calls from oversees in the last week, this is a scam and if you answer or call back you will be charged premium rates so only answer calls from numbers you recognise. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company and this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80. If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56. This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month. The installing company are required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification. The company also offer a button which can be installed near the front and back doors for a once off payment – this is nothing to do with either Pobal or Abbeyfeale Community Alert and is just between the installing company and the client. The idea is that it offers extra security when answering the door. If you leave the house close windows, turn lights on and maybe invest in a timer for them. Now is the time to prepare for winter so make sure you have draught excluders around windows and doors, outside lights working, a supply of batteries, a couple of hot water bottles, know where the stop cock is for the water supply and above all get your chimney cleaned. If you are going for a walk or cycle wear a hi viz jacket and bring a light – in this murky weather it makes the roads so much safer for everyone. We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. LIVE CRIB IN DUAGH: The live crib is back again this Christmas. Located behind St Brigid’s church, the crib will be officially opened after 7.30pm vigil Mass on Saturday December 16. It will remain open to the public until Sunday January 7, 2018. Open daily 10.00am to 9.00pm.

FUNDRAISER FOR FR. MARTIN MCCORMACK: An Afternoon Tea Dance will take place at Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse on Sunday, January 14 to raise funds for Fr. Martin McCormack’s Projects in Swaziland. Fr. Martin, who is from Ballydesmond is a member of the Salesian Missionaries based in Pallaskenry. Music will be provided by Sheila Fitzgerald and Mike Sheehan, Ted McCarthy and also the Nightingales so a great afternoon’s dancing is assured to shake down the excesses of the Christmas. Admission is only €5 and a raffle will be held.

CHRISTMAS WALK: The annual Christmas Walk along the Great Southern Trail Greenway will take place on Wednesday, December 27 at 12.30p.m.. Assembly is at the newly opened Longcourt House Hotel (formerly the Courtenay Lodge), St. Mary’s Road, Newcastle West. The hotel is on the N21 and the public bus services stop alongside it. Walkers will be transferred by courtesy coach to Barnagh from where they will walk the 6 miles [10km], all downhill and mostly along the old railway, back to the Longcourt House where they can enjoy seasonal mince pies, whipped cream and tea/coffee at their leisure. All walkers must wear visibility vests as the final section is through the streets of Newcastle West and involves crossing the busy N21 which must be crossed at the zebra crossing close to the hotel. Cyclists, with visibility gear, helmets and lights, are also welcome and we suggest that they also meet at the hotel at 12.30p.m. and cycle outwards along the Greenway for approximately one hour to Barnagh or beyond and then return in time to enjoy the refreshments. GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL HISTORY: As Christmas is coming a nice gift to oneself or to family/friends would be the Great Southern Trail Limited’s newly published “Limerick & Kerry Railway: Twilight Years” by Liam O’Mahony which is laden with information about the Greenway’s railway history. It is not alone a personal memoir by Liam of the 1950′s to 1980′s railway finale but also reproduces several historic documents. These include a list of the 300 or so shareholders (many of which names are still to be found locally) in the Rathkeale & Newcastle Junction Railway Company which built the line to those towns 150 years ago. Another historic gem which is included is a chapter from “Through the Green Isle”; a Victorian era travel guide which extolled the historic attractions of Adare, Askeaton, Foynes, Ballybunion and Ardfert along with the then newly operational Lartigue railway in Listowel. Liam’s book is very well illustrated with thirty of the photographs being in colour. Twenty full colour railway posters advertising excursion trains to Dublin, Thurles, Cork, Killarney, Knock Shrine and Listowel Races during the 1950′s to the 1970′s will bring back memories to many. WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES 2018 ‘The Gospel of Family’ as we look forward to the visit of Pope Francis and families from all over the world in August. ST. ITA’S DAYCARE CENTRE: The Day Care Centre located near the Church and beside the Glórach Theatre hosts two open days every week. ABBEYFEALE FOR AFRICA CAKE SALE: The annual cake sale for Fr. Tim Galvin’s Mission in South Sudan takes place on Sunday, December 10 from 10-1pm at St. Ita’s Hall. All donations of home baking are very much appreciated and can be left at Batt Harnett’s, The Square. Otherwise contact any of the committee to arrange collection; Lorcan Curtin, Mairead Daly, Carina Prendeville or Marian Harnett.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE: There have been great reports from the annual Carol Service held in the Church of the Assumption last Sunday night and it seems it was, as always, a wonderful night. Well done to all who took part – the five parish schools,

Riona and Helen, The Lost Souls (Soles?) and the parish choirs.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS: Well done to the Christmas Lights committee who did such a great job of lighting the town this Christmas and to Doody Engineering for the wonderful Christmas tree which they made and which lights up the Square under the all seeing eye of Fr. Casey. Thank you to Kostal who sponsored the tree which will be a focal point in the town for many a long year to come. There was a huge crowd in the Square on Friday evening last to greet Santa who arrived on a sleigh to great glee from both the adults and children present. The PRO of the Christmas Lights committee sent the following report: “Thanks to Denis Collins, Jimmy Cahill, Marius Winncki, Maurice O’Connell, Paul Doody, Pakie Devine, Donal Murphy and his son Eoin Murphy who worked tirelessly to install the new Lights – all on their spare time and on a voluntary basis. We would like to thank Fr Tony Mullins and Ann O’Meara for helping us on a weekly basis while we were promoting our Christmas Events.
To our team in the square, Kevin Kenneally, Jim O’Shea, Adam from Mick’s Local, Sheila, Ali, Wioletta, Marie McElligott, Esther O’Connell, Mai Quinlivan, Johnny Walshe, Kori Goad, Chris Smith, Maura O’Connor, Mikey O’Connor, The Gardai, The fire brigade , Tony Noonan, Hilary Collins, Richard Gleeson, -James Collins, our three councillors , the volunteers who manned our food stalls and who did security, Paul Ward, anyone else who came and helped on the night and oh of course our special guests Santa and Mrs Claus ! ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY COUNCIL: Chairperson of Maurice O’ Connell expressed his delight at the turnout and support of the local Community for the switching on the Abbeyfeale Christmas Lights on a chilly but clear Friday night. “The excitement that emanated from the almost 2000 strong crowd of Children and Adults that packed the Square was so contagious you’d have to be made of ice not to get caught up in the enjoyment of it all” exclaimed Maurice. “The chorus of Wows that were heard from all age groups throughout the crowd when the lights were switched on and especially the newly designed Christmas Tree was a moment well worth waiting for” he said. This was followed shortly afterwards by Santa arriving into town on his Sleigh, escorted by a Garda Car and Fire Engine. Santa told Chairperson Maurice that the amazed look on children’s faces as he, Santa, pulled up and waved to everyone will be cherished by him for many years to come. The Council would like to offer sincere gratitude to members of Abbeyfeale Community Council, Abbeyfeale Christmas Lights Committee, Abbeyfeale Tidy Towns, and Abbeyfeale Town Park. They also want to offer huge thanks to Hilary Collins, Gerardine O’Brien, Esther OConnell, Kevin Kenneally, Marie McElligott, Denny Collins, Jimmy Cahill, Wioleta Kelly, Alison Rae, Mary and Michael Lane, The Gardaí, The Fire Brigade, Kostal Ireland Gmbh, The Doody family – especially Paul, Leen’s Hotel, Chris Smith, Kori Goad, the numerous volunteers who helped out, the owners of premises who have supplied power for the Christmas Lights and all the wonderful children and their families who braved the chilly air to support the Communities efforts and to spend a few minutes with Santa and Mrs Claus. . “Again, it shows what can be achieved when various organisations and groups come together” Maurice added.

GLÓRACH NEWS: The mood is buoyant here at the Glórach Theatre after finishing on such a high last Thursday with our production of The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley. No rest for the wicked however, and it’s shoulders to the wheel once again with various events that will take up us to the holiday period. The last Bingo session of 2017 takes place on Monday, December 11 at 8.30 pm and we will be resuming again on New Year’s Day. On Wednesday, December 6, we will be screening the 1968 film, Romeo and Juliet. Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey in the title roles, the film is regarded by many critics as the finest adaptation of this Shakespearean tragedy. Many readers may have studied this drama in school, so here’s a chance to refresh your memories of one of the most enduring love stories of all time, a love that transcended the feuding between the Capulet and Montague families, and while ultimately ending in tragedy, it was a love that was not in vain. The film begins at 8 pm and all are most welcome.

NEWS FROM BRUACH NA CARRAIGE ROCKCHAPEL: The Rockchapel Comhaltas based group Ceoltoiri Sliabh Luachra will present “Pulses of a Thousand Years” at Siamsa Tire on Sunday, December 10 beginning at 8pm. This is a traditional music journey through the history of Ireland from the arrival of An Tuaithe De Danann to the 1916 rising. It will present many old tunes starting with the first tune written in Ireland from the book of William Ballett published in 1583 and many of our old and forgotten dances. All proceeds will go to Brosna Parish Church renovation fund. Then on Thursday, December 14 at 8pm. Bruach Na Carraige will host a night of Christmas baking with celebrity chef Frank Moynihan.

COMMUNITY ALERT: If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday. Several members attended the Community Alert Newcastlewest Garda District meeting in the Devon Inn this week. Diarmuid from Muintir na Tire told us about the two forty foot articulated trucks full of stolen property that was recovered in Tipperary this summer and how only seven items were reunited with their owners because people had not recorded serial numbers. It was emphasised that the minute we buy something in the line of electrical goods, machinery, bicycles, quads find the serial no. and record it even if it was only on a sticker on the inside door of a press. Muintir Na Tire have a log book for sale for just a fiver that you can use to make a record of all you possess and they are available from any member of Abbeyfeale Community Alert. If you see anything that makes you wonder if thieves are casing the area like a car that seems to be travelling around several times ring Abbeyfeale Station on 068 30010. If the Gardai on duty are out on patrol the call will be patched through to NCW who will call the car back to town. We would like to welcome our new Superintendent Eamon O’Neill to the NCW Garda District. Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company, this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80. If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56. This works out cheaper that the rent of a landline which is currently €25 per month. The installing company are required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification. The company also offer a button which can be installed near the front and back doors for a once off payment – this is nothing to do with either Pobal or Abbeyfeale Community Alert and is just between the installing company and the client. The idea is that it offers extra security when answering the door. If you leave the house close windows, turn lights on and maybe invest in a timer for them. Now is the time to prepare for winter so make sure you have draught excluders around windows and doors, outside lights working, a supply of batteries, a couple of hot water bottles, know where the stop cock is for the water supply and above all get your chimney cleaned. If you are going for a walk or cycle wear a hi viz jacket and bring a light – in this murky weather it makes the roads so much safer for everyone. SUPPORT OUR OWN: Just a timely reminder that in order to keep money circulating in the local economy we need to shop locally, socialise locally and eat out locally. Support the fundraising efforts to light up the town this Christmas led by a voluntary committee who stand to gain nothing out of all the work they have put in but who want to make our community and local town welcoming and warm and inviting this Christmas. Support our local theatre whose small voluntary committee are working hard to pay down the debt that remains on the building and to insulate it and do up the parking area. Attend the weekly bingo, support the drama group whose play started last night. Buy your Christmas presents in Abbeyfeale, we have a fine selection of boutiques, hardware stores, beauty salons, hairdressers, toy shops etc. Ann Lyons has local CD’s and books which would make great gifts. There are vouchers available in most shops if you can’t think of a gift and these can be used over the year by the happy recipient. When you leave the local area and spend your money elsewhere that is taking from the whole community. Remember too, that when you travel out you have to buy petrol and food and all the time that you spend on the road you’ll never get back again. Abbeyfeale Abu – this is our place and we need to cherish it.

SENIORS LUNCH: A capacity crowd enjoyed a lovely lunch catered by Ann Kennedy last Sunday at Fr. Casey’s Clubhouse. This was followed by dancing to the laid back sound of Ballyduff’s Mike Condon. Abbeyfeale Community Alert would like to thank Ann Kennedy for the great food, the RSA who provided 100 high viz jackets which were distributed to everyone present, Jerry Lyons of the Fire Service who spoke on Fire safety and local Community Garda Roger O’Donoghue who assured all those present that Abbeyfeale Gardai are always available to help people and that if they ring the station on 068 30010 and the Garda on duty is out on patrol the call will be forwarded to NCW and the patrol car will be notified. Thanks too, to Derbhla Conlon Aherne from WLR who spoke about the supports that they offer seniors in West Limerick include a weekly phone call service, the Rose project where trained and vetted volunteers provide a monthly visitation service and finally the not for profit company RCCN ( Housing) Ltd which provides a cost effective housing maintenance and small repairs principally for the over 60’s and disabled. We would also like to thank all those who brought spot prizes for our raffle. A great community day out and please God a confirmed event in the social calendar from now on.

#RED WEDNESDAY: On Wednesday, November 22 next, in order to promote awareness and solidarity with persecuted Christians, we have been invited by Archbishop Eamon Martin and A.C.N Ireland to pray the Angelus at 12pm and 6pm in remembrance of both past and present martyrs and to wear a red tie or a red scarf as a symbolic reminder of all Christians who have suffered and died for their Christian faith.

Red Wednesday will see many landmarks illuminated in red worldwide, including Armagh Cathedral.

LATE DR. HAYES: Local historian, Billy Broderick did some research and found that Dr. Hayes was born in the Bank of Ireland, The Square in 1902 but by 1911 when the next census was taken the family had moved elsewhere. His father was a Bank Manager here and his mother was from Longford. Thanks to Jer Keneally, Knockanure who first pointed out that this man, born in Abbeyfeale, was a code breaker for the British in WW2 and was a Director of the National Library. The following are some of the pieces from Jer’s original research: During wartime Europe, Dr Hayes and Colonel Dan Bryan, the head of Ireland’s intelligence service G2, led the secret Irish counter intelligence group to decode wireless messages being transmitted through Morse code from a house owned by the German Embassy.

“He masterminded the counter-intelligence program. He ensured Germany felt they could not certainly directly invade Ireland,” said Mr Hull.

Hayes has been referred to by MI5 as Ireland’s “greatest unsung hero” and the American Office of Strategic Services as “a colossus of a man”.

“The heroic thing about this, with both Dan Bryan and Dr Hayes, is they are doing this in some measure without their own government’s approval or knowledge,” said Mr Hull.

HEAD OF NATIONAL LIBRARY Limerick Man’s Post

Dr. Richard J. Hayes, Thornfield, Sandymount. Dublin, has been appointed Director of the National Library in succession to Dr. R. I. Best, who has been appointed to the Institute of Advanced Studies.

Dr. Hayes, who was born in Abbeyfeale, was educated at Clongowes Wood College and Trinity College. He was the first student of Trinity to take three Moderator ships in one year when in 1924 he took Modern Literature, Celtic Languages, and Philosophy in that year he entered the National Library as Assistant Librarian, and four years later took his LL.D. degree.

He has had several works published, including three volumes in Irish by An Gum.

A copy of the “Bendigo Advertiser ” printed on silk, published in Sandhurst. Australia, containing an account of the arrival of William Smith O’Brien in the city, was shown to members of the Bibliographical Society of Ireland by Dr.R . Hayes, National Library, at, a meeting in Dublin. Dr Hayes spoke on recent, acquisitions by the Library, including a manuscript translation of Giraldus Cambrensis by Richard Robinson.1575, earlier than the printed copy; relies of the Edgeworth family. Including manuscript poems, dated 1819 never printed.

Mr. B. F.Bowen read a paper on the ” Comet” newspaper, published in 1831 by the Comet Club. Dublin. It ceased publication in 1883

HIDDEN TREASURE

The romantic discovery by Dr. Hayes, Director of the National library, of two folios from the Tripartite Life of St. Patrick—lost for some three hundred- years—is one that will interest more than scholars and bibliophiles. Anything, however small, that is added to the scanty biographical material relating to Ireland’s patron saint, will be welcomed.

The Tripartite life, which is the foundation of all Patrician lore, was compiled before the end of the ninth century. It consisted, as its name implies, of three dissertations on the Saint’s life and death, which were intended to be recited at the annual three day festival held in his honour.

The missing leaves, long given up for lost, were found in an old book in a house near Dublin.

Flew To Lisbon For Irish Books]

Dr. Richard Hayes, of the National Library, returned last night from Lisbon, where he attended the six-day auction of the library of Jorge O’Neill, of the family of the Counts de Tyrone, descendants of the O’Neills of Ulster. Dr. Hayes was sent by the Government to search for Irish books and manuscripts, and travelled by air from and to Foynes. Interviewed by an IRISH PRESS reporter, he said that the library included an enormous collection of books, most of them relating to Ireland and the Irish abroad. He had to face keen, opposition from Portuguese booksellers, whose interest in Irish books amazed him. Prices went high, but he secured over 100 rare volumes for the National Library. While in Lisbon Dr. Hayes searched the libraries and archives. In the National Library of Lisbon and in the Archives he discovered documents, hitherto unknown, and arranged to have them photographed. In the Bibliotecha d’Ajuda, in one of the Royal Palaces, he made friends with the librarian, a grandson of ” Miss Murphy, of Cork.” In order to attend the auction Dr. Hayes had to leave Ireland -without seeing the catalogue. There was the likelihood that this branch of the O’Neill family, which settled in Portugal in the 18th century, might have carried ancient manuscripts, or documents, of intense interest to Irish historians. As it turned out, the only manuscript sold was a copy of Keating’s Foras Feasa, of which there are many texts here already.

NATIONAL LIBRARY DIRECTOR LEAVES FOR U.S.

Dr. R. J. Hayes, Director of the National Library, by an arrangement with the Rockefeller Foundation, has left for the U-S. to study libraries and library methods there. Among the centres he intends to visit are New York, Princeton, Washington, Boston, Providence, New Haven, Michigan, and Chicago.

The National Library has already recorded on microfilm over a million pages of documents of Irish historical interest in England and the Continent, but so far the vast quantity of material in America has been untapped.

During his ten weeks visit to the States. Dr. Hayes will found the Friends of the National Library of Ireland, a society which, it is hoped, will help to collect and microfilm documents in America for the archives of the National Library.

AS GUIDES

The office of the Director of the National Library, Dr. Richard Hayes, is not spared from the crowding of books and documents and records.

“A library’s business”, he told me is not just with books. It’s job is to collect information. It only has books because there is information in them and also because they provide guides to other forms of information.”

The core of the National Library’s collection of over 500,000 books was the collection of the Royal Dublin Society which was taken into state care in 1877. The books were then housed in the R.D.S. premises at Leinster House. The new building to house the Library was completed in 1890.

As the largest public library in Ireland it aims to provide a general survey of all branches of knowledge but its specific interest is in Irish books, books about Ireland and Irish manuscripts and records. Information, as Dr. Hayes suggested, is no longer confined within the covers of books. There are, for example, in the library over 200,000 photographic plates including the famous collections of Poole, mainly pictures of people, and Lawrence, chiefly pictures of places.

DR. RICHARD J. HAYES, Director of the National Library, and a member of An Chomhairle Ealaion (the Arts Council) for many years, has not sought reappointment to the Council for a further term of office. The Government has appointed Mr. James J. Sweeney, Curator of the Houston Art Gallery in Texas, to replace Dr. Hayes on the Arts Council. Mr. Sweeney, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, lives for part of each year in Co. Mayo. Five of the six outgoing Ordinary Members of the Council have been reappointed for a term of five years in accordance with the Arts Act, 1951.

DR. Richard James Hayes, director of the National Library of Ireland, has retired after 44 year service. Dr. Hayes joined the staff as an assistant librarian in 1923. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he had a distinguished academic record and became a specialist in comparative Linguistics

His knowledge of European languages is immense and he wrote a book on the subject and also a French-Irish dictionary.

We have 2 young local high achievers doing the honours for us – Kori Goad and Chris Smith. After that, Santa will arrive and he and Mrs. Claus will meet local children in the Grotto. That night, in Mick’s Local, there will be a big Christmas Party to start everyone off for the festive season.” There will be stalls in the Square with mulled wine, Christmas decorations, cakes, puddings, jams, marmalades and much more so hopefully if the weather obliges we will create a real Christmas atmosphere with a special Market while people wait to meet Santa and his Missus.

COMMUNITY ALERT: If you have been a victim of crime call the crime victims helpline on Freephone 116 006 between 10—5.30pm Monday to Friday. Two members of the committee attended a Pobal workshop in Killarney last week to hear about the changes with the senior citizens security system. There are a few changes, first of all the form that you are asked to sign no longer requires details of your income. The monitoring of the system will be free for the first year and then will revert to the current rates. The age limits have not changed so once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are entitled to the system. The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company, this fee includes insurance against breakages and is currently €80. If you do not want the insurance cover then the fee is €65. If you do not have a land line the company will organise a sim card for a mobile phone for a quarterly fee of approx. €56. This works out cheaper that the rent of the landline which is currently €25 per month. Another change is that all committee members will have to be Garda Vetted before the end of the year. The installing company are now required to provide identification on their equipment, their vans and their staff and before you admit anyone to your house you should ask for this identification. The company also offer a button which can be installed near the front and back doors for a once off payment – this is nothing to do with either Pobal or Abbeyfeale Community Alert and is just between the installing company and the client. The idea is that it offers extra security when answering the door. Now is the time to prepare for winter so make sure you have draught excluders around windows and doors, outside lights working, a supply of batteries, a couple of hot water bottles, know where the stop cock is for the water supply and above all get your chimney cleaned. We constantly update our FB page with local alerts and information on keeping safe so do keep an eye on that. GLORACH NEWS: Almost all set for next Tuesday, November 21, when our hilarious production of the Jimmy Keary play, ‘The two loves of Gabriel Foley’ commences its run. Further shows on Thursday 23, Friday 24, Saturday 25, Sunday 26, Tuesday 28 and Thursday 30. Booking is highly recommended at 0871383940. Next month, our classic film club will be returning with a screening of the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet on the first Wednesday in December. A screening programme for January to April of next year will be released shortly. In mid-January, we will be screening Shankly: Nature’s Fire, a must for Liverpool and soccer fans. With that in mind, Glórach has invited his Excellency Michael D Higgins to attend an event in Glórach if his calendar permits, for as well as being a poet, he is also an avid soccer fan and supporter of Galway United. Bingo continues on Monday nights at 8.30 pm. It has been very well received to date and we would like to say a big thank you to all our Bingo patrons.

LIGHT UP ABBEYFEALE. Secretary of the Christmas Lights committee Hilary Collins writes: “It is exactly one year since the new Christmas Lights Committee was formed in Leen’s Hotel. The new committee comprised Denis Collins, Marie McElligott, Jimmy Cahill, Esther McElligott, Kevin Kennelly, Gerardine O’Brien and Hilary Colliins.What little Christmas Lights stock we inherited was in bad shape and it was 3 weeks to switch on – if indeed we were going to have anything to switch on!!

We soldiered ahead and put up what we had. The result was decidedly underwhelming. The New Year had the desired effect and we set about organising the gathering of money and the purchasing of new features. We had great fun poring over catalogues of magnificent Christmas lights as we tried to keep within a certain budget. We started with a wonderful donation from the Strictly Come Dancing Event that had been held a few months previously but it was really just the beginning. The capital outlay on something like this is huge and, as a committee, we decided that we would not go into debt but we would have lots of plans to light up Abbeyfeale in a way that would make the town pleasing to the eye!! Right now, the features are going up on the poles. Unfortunately, the ESB does not take kindly to their poles being used, so for this year, we are only using the poles that belong to the County Council. With Jimmy and Denis leading the team – out working every evening, we had to ensure that we had good Insurance – expensive Insurance, as it turns out! We asked Doody Engineering, Abbeyfeale, to create a tree for us – one that would not wear away and have to be replaced in 4/5 years. What we will have now should last for 50 years!! We are about to put thousands of bulbs on it. It should be so bright, it will be seen from Mars!! We have plans for more lights next year. We would like to extend some nice lights down New Street and Bridge Street but in the meantime we are having funfilled fundraisers. On November 18, in Jack Ryan’s there is a Donkey Derby, there is a Tea Dance in Fr. Casey’s GAA on Sunday, November 26 and later on that evening there is a Darts Night in the Ploughman. Our great switch on is at 5.45pm on Friday, December 1. We have 2 young local high achievers doing the honours for us – Kori Goad and Chris Smith. After that, Santa will arrive and he and Mrs. Claus will meet local children in the Grotto. That night, in Mick’s Local, there will be a big Christmas Party to start everyone off for the festive season. Our last fundraiser for the moment is a Pub Quiz at Matt McCoy’s on Friday, December 8 with lots of facts and fun and spot prizes.

COMPLAINTS RE: DOG FOULING: There has been a number of complaints recently about dog fouling on footpaths and on the Great Southern Trail. We have also been told that a number of dogs are being walked without a leash on the trail. The authorities at Limerick Co. Council have been informed.

SHORT-TERM FOR NOVEMBER: Many people choose to abstain from alcohol for the month of November and offer this prayerful act in honour of their deceased loved ones. You can do likewise!

MASS FOR ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS: World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is on Saturday, November 18 and Mass will be celebrated for all those who have lost their lives on that evening at 7pm.

Check the battery in your flash light and have it to hand rather than candles which can be dangerous. . If you have a panic button from Community Alert this is a good time to check its battery. Wear it on your wrist – if you trip and fall or feel dizzy or sick or are frightened by a caller press the button. The monitoring company will answer immediately and get one of your nominated contacts to go to you if necessary. DANCE IN DEVON INN: There will be a a fundraising dance in aid of The Hope Foundation organised by students in Hazelwood College who are travelling to Calcutta next Spring. It will be held in the Devon Inn Templeglantine, on Friday, November 2 at 9pm. Admission is €5 for adults (children free) and there will be a raffle on the night. Music will be provided by the Mountain Road céilí band. Your support on the night would be greatly appreciated.
